Seguso Vetri D'Arte: Glass Objects from Murano (1932 1973)
P**N
An indispensable book for the Murano glass scholar or serious collector.
For the first time the confusion around the origins and production sharing of Seguso Vetri d'Arte, Barovier Seguso Ferro, VSM Cappellin Venini, Zecchin Martinuzzi and the various retailers like CVM Pauly who commissioned work are to some extent clarified. The overlaps in designs that occurred between these companies in their volatile early days are demonstrated thanks to a wealth of catalogues of drawings from these early days - in some cases accompanied by furnace drawings and contemporary model photos. This book may seem expensive, but it breaks new ground in terms of research and offers a wealth of illustrations in the form of drawings as well as many fine colour plates of the main pieces. Be aware that one of the strengths of this book is the limit of the period it covers - it stops at 1973 - making it a very focused record. It also has sections on dating, signatures and labels, and there in an epilogue on what the Seguso successors are doing today. It is an altogether splendid book.
