My Most Favorite Piano Book!
I adore worshipping Jesus as I play the innovative, encouraging and exciting virtuosic and gorgeous collection of 12 Hymns of Grace and Reflection in this paperback of "In the Light of His Glory" deftly arranged by Martha Mier. Her scores are printed in bold, dark print clearly seen with plenty of room to write ornamental improvisations, fingering, hand position changes, articulation, phrasing, dynamics and other notes as necessary. Alfred's publication printing is so clear that even though I have visual challenges, I can see to play each of the 12 pieces in this collection even without wearing my glasses and I like that. Even the grace notes are easily visible without my glasses! This is another fantastic Alfred's piano score collection! Also, Martha Mier never disappoints me and I learn so much and have so much fun playing and learning her arrangements.I plan to memorize and write improvisations of all 12 pieces and perhaps do some transcriptions of a couple of them. Martha Mier's arrangements inspire me tremendously and her melodies are accompanied with interesting harmonies that sound robust and spiritually meaningful! Her chordal tones create some interesting tensions that beautifully resolve into reflective moments of deep worship to Jesus, Whom loves these pieces:Amazing Grace; His Eye Is On The Sparrow; In The Garden; It Is Well With my Soul; Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee; Jesus Loves Me; Morning Has Broken; My Jesus I Love Thee; Near To The Heart of God; This Is My Father's World; Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus; What A Friend We Have In Jesus-Wow, personally for me there is no greater collection! As I memorize these pieces and theoretically analyze them I expect to learn so much about chords, color tones, harmonization, musical form and arranging that I sense I am developing into an early advanced pianist and I pray that Martha Mier will arrange a whole new set that features advanced arrangements and become available her on amazon.com because I like her style-she and I seem to be communicating together and I can not thank her enough for I am a better pianist for having had the opportunity to study her arrangements that she has developed into delightful piano solos that lend themselves easily to exciting improvisation developments so that you can truly make each piece your very own. Thank You, Martha Mier- I can not wait to see your advanced arrangements and love your work as they bless me-God bless you!As always delivery was timely and my book arrived in perfect condition:) If your heart is for worshipping Jesus on the piano with these songs and you enjoy Martha Mier's arrangements, I highly recommend this book to you-it is pure joy to play from:)

Wonderful selection
I am late intermediate - early advanced and loved these pieces. They sound musical, fit well under the hand, can be learned for church services relatively easily, and are well received my congregation. It's pitch-perfect for hymns with a lovely, melodious sound that are also learn'able on a weekly basis.

Solid hymns for church
I think this book is too highly rated as Late Intermediate to Early Advanced. It's more like Intermediate. If Amazon had given me the option to look inside the book, I would known what level I was really getting. If you're an Intermediate level player, you will have no trouble playing these pieces after a little practice. The hymns are standard fare that you'll find in many other books, and the arrangements are solid and fall easily under the hand. As the first reviewer said, there are several songs here that can be used for funerals, and also for preludes and offertories. The arrangements are not technically exciting, unfortunately...no Mark Hayes here. However, I will use this book because the pieces are so easily learned and fit nicely into my church's worship environment. I'm always looking for a Sunday piece at the last minute, so this fills the bill of one that can quickly be mastered for performance. All of the pieces are 3 or 4 pages long (good offertory length), with the exception of "His Eye is on the Sparrow", which is 5 pages long. Key changes are simply, but effectively, executed...no complex chords to deal with.In summary, it's a solid, technically unexciting, but useful book, over-rated in difficulty level.

I love this book. The pieces are a little challenging, but still easy enough to sit down and play for enjoyment. Beautiful arrangements.

Love this book for my own enjoyment--wonderful song choices and rich, full arrangements. I use this with my advanced piano students as well; they find it accessible if a bit challenging on occasion. The arrangements are great for SHOWING students great ways to enrich playing in their own hymnals.

Great arrangements!
This is a great arrangement of wonderful hymns! I heard a woman playing in a hospital lobby and had to stop and ask about the music. The songs challenged me but I could still play them all the way through 1st try. I like the key changes in each song as well. They're very melodious and the tune remains recognizable throughout the song, my husband agrees. My favorite is Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. I'll be looking for more work by Martha Mier!

Easy to play
This is a fabulous book. Fairly easy to play, but does not sound too simple for playing at church.Songs are all fairly short 1 min and 45 secs or so.

Sounds impressive
Lively arrangements for high intermediate. Meier is a genius at arranging tunes to sound lush, but easier to play than you would guess.

Beautiful!
I have collected quite a few books of arrangements of hymns which are suitable for meditation at Mass and this is one of my favourites. I believe I will be able to use every single one. They are not too heavy or the harmonies too chromatic but are just so beautiful and melodic. I played through the whole book when it came in and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have several Martha Mier books and her arrangements are consistently lovely and playable.
