Glastonbury: Avalon of the Heart

A read with a smile
This book was an easy read and contained concepts that I have read years ago. If you are interested in ‘root race’ theory and other obscure biblical references with some Arthurian content this book is for you. I liked it!

MAGICAL
Celebrate! This delightful book is no longer out of print! After unsuccessfully searching used and out-of-print bookstores for this book for many years, it has recently been reissued by Samuel Weiser, Inc. I was NOT disappointed. Dion Fortune, a.k.a. Violet Mary Firth, wrote this classic work in the 1930s, yet her observations on Glastonbury still ring true today. GLASTONBURY: AVALON OF THE HEART eloquently brings together in one place all of the various mundane and esoteric lore that surrounds this quaint little hamlet in the middle of the English West Country. All of the mystery, intrigue and sacredness of this ancient land are beautifully rendered in her tiny collection of essays. To read this book is to inspire a visit to that sacred land. To visit the ancient seat of Avalon is a life-changing experience. Those of you who are familiar with Dion Fortune know clearly of her association with esoteric secret societies, the sacred Qabalah, and the use of psychic defense measures to combat Nazism during World War II. Fortunately, for those of you who haven't the time or the inclination to pursue those other noble but complex disciplines and intersts, AVALON OF THE HEART has been kept simple and accessible. Read it. Then visit this truly magical land and see it for yourself. And by all means, take a copy of this book with you.

Avalon revisited
Having visited Glastonbury twice before I read this book I found that it captures the spirit of its magical abbey, springs, the Tor, and the surroundings. It is slow in places but it is a wonderful telling of many tales associated with Glastonbury.

A Magical Journey to be Savored.
I adore this book. The lyrical writing takes us back to a time before Glastonbury became another New Age tourist trap. Fortune effectively weaves together history and mysticism in a lyrical tapestry of myth and legend.A magical journey to be savored.

A Book for those on a Quest.
Hard to rate this book, because it describes a time and a place, not a story. For me, it added to and enriched my information on this magical place and time.

Historical Avalon
This is written by someone who lived in the area and knew the legends first hand and other insights not widely known. It is a collection of brief descriptions of the local legends. I found it very interesting. It would have been nice to visit when some of the archeological research was going on from messages reportedly given by the spirit of a monk who had lived there.

Couldn't put it down!
I have been to Avalon and Challis Well many times over the years and it's always a wrench to have to come away. Dion Fortune's excellent book describes what it's like to live there, the feelings she has of the spiritual life shines through and reading it i can imagine myself back there again. She considers herself to be an Avalonion, which she is. I was born and live on the Isle of Wight but i know where my heart is. Avalon!

For wisdom-seekers
This is no ordinary take on Glastonbury and its mysteries; it's thankfully devoid of "New Age" fluff and whilst much of it is based on speculation, it's a fascinating account by a writer who is universally recognised by western occultists for her spiritual knowledge and whose insights I am grateful to have access to. If you are drawn to this book, delay no further...

Everyone For Themselves..
I looked forward to this book for years, being a huge fan of such literature. There was so much build-up to it that I saved it as if it would be an extraordinary dessert. I was stupendously disappointed.I do not like to write a negative review of anyone, but it seems that it's fashionable write nothing but good of this book !Call me a barbarian, but once in awhile the "Emperor Has No Clothes" and someone has to break the ice.
