action packed historical thriller
The Chase is an action packed historical thriller written by the bestselling adventure novelist, Clive Cussler (b. 1931). Best known for creating the "Dirk Pitt" series of adventure novels, Cusser strays into new territory with his new novel "The Chase". Cussler paints a very detailed, vivid and interesting pitcher of what life was like in West 1900th century America. All while introducing us to an electrifying new hero and leading man, Detective, "Isaac Bell". Bell is a no-nonsense detective driven by a deep sense of morals and justice. He is well educated, handsome, bright, intelligent and detailed driven who always gets his man, or dose he? Cussler, dose a wonderfully great job of getting you the reader interlaced and involved in this classic story of good vs. evil, with a little bit or romance tossed in the mix. His level of detail will soon have you feeling as if you, yourself are sitting right there in box car across from to the killer called the "Butcher Bandit" hearing and feeling the repeated rhythmic beats of the train as it rolls along the tracks. Your hart will be skipping a beat and your breath will be taking away, while you wipe the mud out of your eyes. You find yourself sitting in a 1906 classic open cockpit car locked in a 24 hour high speed chase across California's dusty dirt roads in pursuit of one of the most ruthless thrill killers of all time, chasing and hunting him down. Then just when you think, the chase is over and you feel as if you can take a deep breath. Cusselr, will have you back on the edge of your seats as you are transported back with Bell in the midst of the great San Francisco earthquake. Cussler, will have you feeling the ground shaking, smelling smoke and death as he has you fully immersed in the devastation and destruction of 1906 San Francisco. The chase is not over "Ruskin," the Butcher Bandit" is back on the run, with Bell in hot purist. Who will win in this ultimate battle of wits. Just when you think, you know what is coming around the corner and how everything will end Cussler will leave you hanging with the most unexpected cliffhanger of a conclusion ever.Clive Cusslers's "The Chase" is a detailed novel that filled with suspense, adventure and never-ending action. He has painted a very interesting, intriguing and vivid picture of what the American life was like at the turn-of-the-century, and for a new setting and cast of characters. I have to consider this one of "Clive Cusslers" best works to date. What are you waiting for

Long overdue change of scenery for Cussler
Long time Cussler fan here, having worked my way through most of the Dirk Pitt, Kurt Austin, and Oregon series. As entertaining as those books are, I've become a little disheartened with the same story being churned out over and over again - there's only so many times I can read about Austin or Cabrillo saving the world from certain doom with nothing but their seemingly irresistible charm and some wise cracking jokes. The Chase is a whole different beast since it's set in the early 1900s. The story follows investigator Isaac Bell, a member of the famed Van Dorn Detective Agency, in his quest to apprehend The Butcher Bandit, a highly intelligent and seemingly uncatchable bank robber responsible for numerous hold ups and the murders of over three dozen people.Bell is an intriguing main character. With his photographic memory, aristocratic background, charming personality, and dedication to justice he reminds me a lot of Preston & Child's agent Pendergast, another series I'm a big fan of. The 1900's setting is a refreshing change from the usual modern day ships and deep ocean submersibles from most Cussler books. The villains are suitably despicable in their actions, making it easy to want to see their downfall. It did take a little while to get me interested, but the book gets better with each page and the eponymous chase sequence, featuring a couple of high powered steam locomotives, was great reading.A solid debut for an interesting new series. Looking forward to seeing where this goes with Book 2.

A Remarkable Cat And Mouse Adventure From Clive Cussler
In 1950, the wreck of a steam locomotive is discovered in a Montana Lake. There are three occupants on board. 44 years earlier, these three people led Isaac Bell, chief investigator of the Van Dorn Detective Agency, on a harrowing chase that covered much of the western United States. In 1906, the western United States was being terrorized by the "Butcher Bandit"; a ruthless bank robber who not only robbed banks, but murdered any witnesses to his crimes. He made his escape in an ornately designed railroad box car. Unable to crack the case, the U.S. Government hires the Van Dorn detective agency, along with its number one detective, Isaac Bell. Bell has faced many challenges in his career, but none like nabbing the Butcher Bandit. From Arizona to California, Montana, Utah, and Nevada, Bell pursues the ruthless Bandit. He soon discovers that the Bandit is like no other criminal. Bell must soon learn to think like the Bandit in order to have any hopes of catching him. As the story progresses, Bell becomes involved with many characters, including the Bandit's own sister, and a lovely secretary named Marion, whom he falls head over heels in love with.To make matters even worse, after tracking the Bandit to San Francisco, Bell is caught in the great San Francisco earthquake, which destroys the entire city and leaves thousands homeless. Despite this tragedy, Bell learns that the Bandit and his accomplice sister are trying to flee the United States for the safety of Canada. Acquiring a train of his own to chase the bandit, Bell sets off on a high-speed run to the Canadian border. Will he catch the Bandit in time?I've become a big fan of Clive Cussler in the last year, and I've read several of his books, but I must say that "The Chase" is the best one I've read so far. The action starts with the first page and doesn't let up until the end. The characters are vivid and well-developed, especially the hero, Isaac Bell. Cussler's description of life in the west at the turn of the 20th century is very interesting, and he even includes a factual narrative about the San Francisco earthquake. It's easy to root for Isaac bell as he chases his arch nemesis across the west, and there are several run-ins between the two.I give "The Chase" my highest recommendation. I hope Cussler keeps turning out great adventure stories as good as this one was.

The print is a good size, easy to read without being too large.
This is a gift for my father who is sight impaired. The print size is ideal and he is enjoying being able to read again.

Average..
A Cussler read after a gap of about years. While the story was gripping and entertaining enough, without the lure of treasure and myth, it did not enthuse me as much as Atlantis Found or Inca Gold. There are good period details but at some points it felt like dumping of information just for the sake of it .
