BUY THIS PROJECTOR!!!
This projector is fantastic. I bought this as an upgrade to an older unit to enhance my picture and was blown away by the quality. It works relatively well even in bright conditions, which is good because there are times I don't feel like watching sporting events or movies in a cavernous-like environment. However this baby truly shines when the lights are out. Setup is also fairly simple with the lens control functions on the remote control.

Why do they insist on calling this a 4K projector? That is so annoying. It is a 1080P projector. They have a cool trick in their tech....but DO NOT call it 4K.There has to be some sort of law broken here. What if some sucker bought this thinking it was a 4K Projector?

4k for under $4k sounds appealing but on deeper look you will be disappointed.
Understand that this is a "Shift 4k" projector not a "true 4k" projector which is why the lumens are low, and the price is cheap. The resulting picture is much sharper than a 1080p Projector, and for 4k 24hz content you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference, but you have to understand that this is using multiple passes to achieve the resolution. Basically 24hz is presented at 96hz and the image is shifted 4 times to make the image. The result works pretty well, and keeps cost down. It also give Huge contrast ratios.Where it is limiting is that you lose a LOT of brightness. This is fine if you are doing 120 inches, but 200 inches will push this to a level of darkness that will make watching not so fun. This is definitely not the choice if you don't have a totally dark room.As there is not a lot of 4k content right now, and HDMI doesn't have content protection for 4K yet, I can't recommend this projector for anyone.

... a review here after the other reviewer gave this amazing projector a 1
I had to leave a review here after the other reviewer gave this amazing projector a 1. I pre ordered mine through a separate store and have had it since early January. Initially there were handshake issues but since the first update I have not had one issue.Picture Quality.Jaw dropping, stunning, unreal, take your pick. This projector, with its excellent uniform color and truly impressive contrast and black levels blow away any TV set or Projector I have seen. My cousin with his Panasonic VT60(a beautiful panel) is envious of this JVC, it is that good. Color out of the box was very good and I only needed to adjust the gray scale a bit. convergence was excellent and the focus is razor sharp. Shadow detail is excellent and there is plenty of depth to the image. If one has the proper room for this amazing projector grab it, you will not be disappointed, it is truly stunning. I gave it a 4 because it wasn't free.

Great picture, poor input
I've had this 6 mo., it puts out a fantastic picture but its now unusable because the firmware update to make its HDMI inputs work correctly have "bricked" it. It will not show me menus, just a still pic of my Sony BD screen...it's like a Polaroid picture, but its $4000. It's been a known Problem for years, booooo JVC.

Continues JVC's dominance in Home Projectors . . . and its early release problems are fixed.
I sold my JVC DLA HD250 (I reviewed here 2 years ago on Amazon) to buy this 3D version, the DLAX500. This upgrade was an extravagance, but I'm extremely pleased with this projector. JVC's recent series of projectors are a truly wonderful opportunity for us regular folks to get very high end quality for a great price.Yet again, JVC out-brights, out-details, out-performs anything else selling for 3-5 times the price. Yes, it's gotten closer. SONY's new projectors are real close, but often for more money. As I said about the JVC HD250, and it applies even more so for this DLAX500: "these colors are accurate -- the ultimate in natural faces in dramas or outrageous saturation in those over-the-top action fantasies. Blacks are truly black -- the only way to thoroughly enjoy dark sci-fi or night-time horror is to have true black, with every detail popping out of the dark as intended. Bright scenes are naturally rich with detail, and NOT crushed to where nothing is visible. This is a great image. Detailed, colorful, rich looking. You will never go out to a movie theater again. Sorry theater guys."Ok, so why spend more for this 3D, pseudo 4K projector? The image is up-scaled, 4K pixel, even if not truly 4K information. What does it look like? Smoother, finely detailed, artifact-free, and a vastly superior viewing experience with my current Blu-Ray collection. It is jaw-droppingly detailed on my 11 foot wide screen. It steps up the image detail noticeably . . . and my entire collection of Blu-rays and DVDs looks better at this very large display size. After some modest calibration with the WOW disk, the image is wonderful. The projector also has very wide operating parameters and will work in most room sizes. My screen is the excellent but inexpensive Silver Ticket HDTV 16:9 Fixed Frame Projector Screen purchased here on Amazon. The lamp on this projector is more than bright enough, and I have it set below it's maximum output. I couldn't recommend a product more. But, what about the 3D? Spectacular!!!. Other talk about various 3D artifacts that they see on other projectors. Are they here, also? Beats me. I'm too lost in the depth, color, and detail of Pacific RIm, Captain America, various animated movies to notice. This easily competes with the downtown IMAX theater image . . . on a home screen. Finally . . . the input/handshake problem referenced by another reviewer. He's right to be angry. The 1st iteration had an HDMI problem. I waited until a later release of this projector (April, 2014) with the new firmware upgrade already installed at the factory. Completely, absolutely, problem-free. With the new firmware, the HDMI problem is resolved. It is a non-issue. My SONY Bluray player, my Directv or my PIoneer all talk to the projector with no problems. Switching inputs is no problem. There may also be a different, minor issue with the higher settings of JVC's Clear Motion Drive . . . which like SONY's approach, is best left off anyway. It's often called the soap-opera effect for a reason. It's awful even when working perfectly. I'll maybe upgrade firmware when this is resolved, but I still won't use it.Bottom line. I love my JVC. Will I trade this for a true 4k projector? Unlikely. At what projection size can you see these differences? I'm NOT going to re-buy my Blu-ray collection in 4K. The studios are looking skittish about Blu-ray, so a 4k medium? Not gonna happen. And streaming 4k? Sure thing. For a hefty fee and maybe uncompressed so it's actually watchable?. Sure thing. And I'm holding my breath. Love this projector
