Jip en Janneke
This is a Dutch classic which still is as fine a book for children as it was when it came out, long ago

childhood memories
Great book. Grew up with it and now my daughters get to enjoy some Dutch culture, while living in the US, too.

Great Dutch Children's Book Series
My family is homeschooling with a Waldorf curriculum, and we are fortunate enough to be able to teach our children two foreign languages, just like they do in the Waldorf schools. We are teaching Spanish and Dutch, since my husband is from Holland and we both speak passable Spanish. We bought the Jip en Janneke books on our last trip to Holland (they are cheaper there, though the plane tickets will set you back about $1,000 per person, so maybe you're better off buying the books online for $50 apiece!)About Jip en Janneke: It is a great way to learn Dutch, if you have someone to help you translate for the first half of the book or so. After that, I could understand almost everything without help. There is a lot of repetition of words, and the chapters are very short (so I can stop after one, and not exhaust myself with too much thinking to incorporate at once). I am reading it to my daughter, and learning for myself at the same time. We are to the point where we can stop the story and say, "what does that mean?" and my daughter (age 6) will be able to tell us sometimes! I know it isn't necessarily "Waldorf" to teach languages this way, but what we do is, we read one or two sentences from the book (in Dutch), and then translate into English and say it again. When I don't know what it means, my husband translates. If I don't know one word from the sentence, I ask my husband for that one word, and then I translate. If I think my daughter will be able to translate, I ask her what the last sentence meant. The stories are sweet, and authentic. They are about a girl and boy who are neighbors and play together. The first chapter starts with Janneke moving next door to Jip. Jip sees her through a gap in the hedge between their yards, and he says, "Who are you?" She replies, "I am Janneke. I live here." He says, "Yesterday you did not live here!" and she says, "Today I live here!" He decides to go over to play, and he gets stuck in the gap in the hedge. Janneke tries to pull him out, but he is really stuck. He cries loud, and his father appears to pull him out and tell him he has to go through the gate to get over there and play. That's the gist of the entire first chapter, two pages. After that there is a lot of descriptions of different ways they play together. One chapter is about pretending to be Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, and that one was particularly easy for my daughter to help translate, because she knows the story of Red Riding Hood! She can really relate to the way they play! One thing that is nice about the books, from a Waldorf perspective, is that there is mention of the seasons. They build a snowman in the winter, and go to the beach in the summer. They celebrate holidays, though usually these are mentioned, rather than described (for example, the day after Christmas, Janneke teases Jip about leaving his shoe on the hearth as if Santa will still be coming again to put more toys in it, and then they play with the toys they received). If you are an adult learning to speak Dutch, I recommend this book. And if you are attempting to teach Dutch to a child, I highly recommend it!

This is a beautiful book. It follows the adventures of two friends
This is a beautiful book. It follows the adventures of two friends. The stories are very short and the accompanying pictures delightful. This would be a wonderful gift for a child or an adult learning to read Dutch, which is me. I would buy this book again to give as a gift.Additional Note: (There is a 6 cd storybook available that has 80 of the stories, I had to get it from the Netherlands), but perfect if you want to read and listen at the same time.

Nice book
I’m not a kid but I this so I can improve my Dutch and read something that’s not too difficult. This is great for my level. Came in perfect condition and lots of text for reading. Sometimes kids books can be way too short but this has lots of good content.
