Good retro-pi screen over HDMI...
This did the trick. I was able to take my retro pi portable with this 4 inch screen. You will need to install the driver on the pi, just follow the instructions on the wiki. Using the HDMI worked for the retro gaming, I wouldn't expect the gpio pins to have the performance you'll need. This comes with a small HDMI plug so don't worry about having to plug in a HDMI cable, they have you covered, and it looks nice. I wish I didn't have to set the Pi's screen rotation, but that's a minor gripe. Overall happy with the screen.

An overall good experience getting this up and running.
I am new-ish to working with components like this. This display has been a joy to work with in building a prototype of a product I'm developing. I am using it on an RPi4 running 64-bit Raspian (Debian 12). The firmware support is solid. The display was trivial to have working properly. I had a learning curve with integrating the touchscreen into the software, but that has nothing to do with the Waveshare device itself and everything to do with my novice status. I would use this screen again for other projects, and I will be looking favorably at other Waveshare devices.

Waveshare makes GREAT stuff. I have 7 different screens, all great!
I have a 4.3 inch display, (3) 3.5 inch displays, a 4 inch display and a 2.8 inch display. Excellent quality, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, fantastic documentation and technical support on their extensive website to walk you through the set up process. Why is this a big deal? I am using (3) of these screens with Raspberry Pi systems, which can be a challenge to set up. Thank You Waveshare

The discription on Amazon is miss leading. It is not 800 x 480. It is 480 x 800!
The text description on the Amazon page clearly says 800 x 480.The LCD is actually 480 x 800, as shown in the photo. The EDID is reported from this monitor as 480 x 800, as shown in the photo.EDID is data that a display reports to the computer or other video source about its capabilities.Generally, the first number in the pixel size would be the horizontal scan, and second number the vertical scan, as in 1920 x 1080 is standard HD television in a normal landscape picture.None of this matters if you are able to set custom settings in Linux etc., but some applications can't output custom video scan settings.I gave 3 stars only because the description is deceptive on Amazon. I have not done further testing as this will not work for me.To the vendor:Please update the text description on AmazonWhy not offer this with a switch or jumper to use as 800 x 480 OR 480 x 800? Surely the HDMI scan processor is capable to do both ways.

FALSE ADVERTISING! 800x480 resolution, 9:16 aspect ratio. NOT 480x800 resolution 16:9 aspect ratio!
BUYER BEWARE! The product it advertised as a 480x800 (landscape) screen 16:9. Is it not 480x800 16:9 (landscape) and is 800x480 9:16 (portrait). Other products are advertised by waveshare as 9:16 (portrait) or 3:4 (portrait) aspect ratio. But not this one, the product pictures are also in landscape when the screen is in portrait mode. There is no way to change this!If I was told about this in the product description I would feel less lied too. When I bought the product there was no warring, or description about it being 800x480 9:16 (portrait).

Works with Octoprint!
Took a little work to get all set up, but looks great and works great so far! Also, The seller was quick to send me a link for all of the documentation and driver file locations. Although, the instructions in the box give you a pretty much everything you need to install off of Putty.I'm using the screen with raspberry pi for my touch screen interface to my custom 3D printer with Octoprint and TouchUI.

No connections for Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
The two included video connectors fit Raspberry Pi models with either a full-size HDMI socket, or a micro-HDMI socket, but not the mini-HDMI socket used on the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.
