Beats having to get on a level with the liquid on a conventional thermometer to get an acurate reading. One word of warning, despite having a battery safety strip in place the sensor is still reacting to ambient temperatures. When I removed this strip the reading was way too high. Oh dear I thought, have I got a duff one, then I realised the unit had been inside a very warm post van before delivery and was still slightly heated up. Leave a few minutes to cool down in those circumstances (or warm up if left in an external mail box in freezing conditions) then press reset and temperatures will stabilise. So far so good, one mercury, one liquid and one car external temperature reader all closely agree and the single AA battery is dead easy to change. It sits behind a tightish fitting, oval flexible plastic cover, which overlaps a 6mm raised oval spigot. No tools or broken finger nails required. There is a small slide switch inside, next to the battery holder, to change from C to F, so no complicated routine of button pushes to change values.The next test is time to see how long lasting the electronics are and I cannot give a report on that yet.

Appears nicely made. Uses AA battery. Initially delighted, then disappointed: it appeared to have poor accuracy, seeming to read consistently high. It only claims accuracy of plus or minus one degree Celsius (+/- 1.8 deg F), yet reads to the nearest tenth of a degree Celsius. I understand accuracy is more problematic at lower temperatures, the ones I most want to monitor. Liked the idea of the item, so bought another, which tended to read even higher than the first, by roughly half a degree Celsius. With regret, sent both back to Amazon. Would be a great gadget, complete with current, max and min temp settings (with easy reset) if only one could be confident that it were accurate.Enquired about alternatives. Was quoted £70 plus VAT plus delivery for a simple, conventional thermometer, accurate to a tenth of a degree Celsius, intended for professional use. There were legal complications as it contained mercury. I manage without, but here comes winter and I would love to have a gadget like this one, if only I could have confidence in its accuracy. N.B. Brannan branded item appears identical.

This is simple. It has a nice big display which I can see from the kitchen window that shows the current temperature and the maximum and minimum reached since the last reset. Reset is done by simply pressing a button. I've been looking for a good thermometer that does just that, and I couldn't be more pleased with this. Apologies for stating the blindingly obvious, but I read one Amazon review that complained that a garden thermometer registered ridiculous temperatures. I'm sure you know this, but you have to site garden thermometers so they are never in direct sunlight.Update: It's the 26th June 2015 today. I bought this thermometer two years ago. It's been out in all weathers and it's still doing the business on the same battery. If there was an award for the most 'fit for purpose' product I've ever bought from Amazon, this would be in the top five - the other four are pretty spectacular too!.Update: It's the 2nd January 2018 today. I bought my first Dostmann Thermometer 5 Years ago which was put outside in the Shade. In all that time the accuracy has remained spot on and the product continues to weather extremely well. During the past 5 years the Button Battery has only been replaced twice! Its been so good I have purchased 2 more for Christmas presents!.. Great Value and accurate product....would recommend!

This was a birthday gift from our daughter and son in law to my husband. He LOVES it. Spends all his time telling me what the temperature is (i.e. switch off the boiler) or what it has been overnight (i.e. switch off the boiler). His only complaint: he wishes the F and C switch were more accessible.

Simple to set up (Take it out of the box, activate the battery) and, making the assumption that it is accurate, it is also very simple to use. Three figures; max, min and current temperatures all clearly displayed with a reset button to start over again. I bought it for the greenhouse but my wife has 'borrowed' it for the house to confront me with her assertion that the temperature in the living room is far lower that I claim and so I may have to get another for the greenhouse. Or turn the central heating up.

I already have one of these for my greenhouse and it seems to be very accurate so I bought one for my holiday cottage to see how low the temperature was going when I wasn't there.

Does the job just fine. Easy to read and reset, also feels quite robust. Simple to mount. Glad to have chosen it.
