Book came right on time and on good condition.

The story line adheres fairly faithfully to real events. The characters are all real. Their portrayal, mixed. Olmos portrays Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo fairly well, at times a bit too theatrical. Salma Hayek does a great job as Minerva Mirabal, one of the three political opponents brutally murdered by Trujillo's henchmen. This led to the Catholic Church voicing its (timid) protest against violence by way of a pastoral letter read in all churches during a mass. Trujillo himself was assassinated a little over one year later, and a blood bath of thousands of presumed opponents ensued, led by his oldest son and remaining supporters.Ms Julia Alvarez' book is one of a series depicting the saga of interrelated families during those crucial months and their fight for survival. All related literature can be quite revealing of political developments in the second half of the 20th century. Particularly involving the role of the great powers and the rest of Latin America,

Great story told through the eyes of the four Mirabel sisters about their fight against "El Jefe," the dictator of the Dominican Republic. It focused more on their personal experiences than on the broader resistance movement.

El libro llego en perfecta condiciones. Este libro es recomendado para Que los jóvenes De 14 años en adelante lo lean especialmente en la materia de español.

Our conversational spanish class read this book in spanish along with the english translation...a spanish "Book club" is a great tool for learning or brushing up the language. This marvelous book, based on true events inspired great discussion and of course we have a wealth of new vocabulary. Based on the heart wrenching story of the Maribel sisters of the Dominican Republic at the time of Tujillo the author Julia Alvarez uses great insight in presenting the woman as real human beings whose very humanity transcends the legends they have become. An absorbing read about a time most Americans know very little.

Lo lei para aprender el idioma, pero en vez fui llevarse a un lugar horrible pero fascinante a la vez. La escritura de Alvarez es increible mientras el tema es una de la mas sangrimiento y hueso escalofriante historias de todos de latinoamerica. Lo lei una y otra vez, no pude parar. Gracias a Alvarez por enciende una luz en una importante leccion de historia para todos.

Esta es una cuenta histórica, emocionante y conmovedora. Me gustó mucho.Ademas de leer el libro también escuché la edición audio  En el Tiempo de las Mariposas (Texto Completo) [In the Time of the Butterflies ]. La me gustó también.Hay muchos diferencias en el vocabulario entre el libro de papel y libro de audio. La versión de papel tenía muchos palabras nuevos para alguien más costumbrado en libros de España. Creo que la traducción del libro fue revisada en 2005 con palabras dominicanas.

The story was very gripping and fascinating. I loved the way the author organized the chapters, and how each of the sister took a turn in narrating her side of the story.Unfortunately, I will never know what was true or what was fabricated by the author. I picked up this book upon the recommendation of a dear friend, and read it thinking that I was reading actual facts in the lives of these wonderfully brave women; not a fictional book!! There’s nothing wrong with fiction; I love it. However, this book was passed on as if the story was taken from things that actually happened.It wasn't until the very last page of the book that the author discloses that she made up the entire thing!!! I think this claim should have been disclosed in the very beginning, when a reader prepares herself for the journey she is about to embark on. I honestly felt betrayed.

Bellísima historia que, aunque ya nos advierte la autora que es ficción, pudo muy bien ser real. Desde luego, lo que es real, es el final de las mariposas de una manera triste, cruel y sin sentido. Para complementar :"La fiesta del chivo ", y hacerse una idea de lo que fue la época desdichada, de la dictadura de Trujillo. Muy recomendable.

Muy bien escrita. Una trama interesante, basada en situaciones reales que fueron novelizadas, pero que dan una clara idea de lo que se vivió en la época del dictador Trujillo en República Dominicana.

La historia es apasionante. La narración muy fluida.
