Basic English Grammar with Audio CD, with Answer Key (4th Edition)

I have been teaching ESL and EFL since 1991 in the US and Japan, and this is the best grammar book and series (there are two other books--for intermediate and advanced students-that I have used. Many ESL/EFL textbooks are available and they have lots of great content, but one universal drawback is that they try to mix grammar with stories and themes that are often too far above the students' emerging language skills that impede their abilities to understand and learn grammar. The Azar series is just about grammar. The grammar is clearly presented in sequence with an abundance of practice opportunities. The exercises are simple, binary, and do not require the students to understand swaths of text. They can hone their grammar and vocabulary skills without worrying about trying to understand larger social or academic concepts. The Azar system of grammar charts and exercises, written, oral, and listening provide the students and the instructors with focused opportunities to master the complex grammar and spelling system of our language. I like to combine these books with the Side by Side series by Molinsky and Bliss to provide the students with easy to master conversational activities that do provide contextual practice for the grammar points. If you are a new ESL/EFL instructor, I strongly advise you to start with this series and the Side by Side series. After you become competent and confident with these two sources, you will be ready to move on to many of the other excellent sources that are available to enhance grammar and conversation.

It is okay; there is nothing good or bad to talk about it.

This is helping my Asian student who had studied English in his home country for a decade and still couldn't understand or speak more than two or three words of English! Step by step, page by page this book is giving him the foundation he needed. We're not out of chapter one yet, and with the added listening and speaking component, I already see his confidence building--the S, V, O structure is making sense, and he's now writing and speaking sentences with subjects and verbs that agree!! SUCCESS!....so grateful for all the Azar books!

FriendsUsedBooks said it was without answers written in, and it was! This is the third attempt to get a clean copy of this text book. And the CD was in it. And the price very reasonable. And it was here three days before the earliest promise. Go with this store. They deliver what they describe.

It's a pretty helpful booklet for those who want to get a feel of the English language; would recommend to beginners.

Azar - perfect as always! I find Azar's explanations and activities are better than any grammar book out there. My students always agree as many of them have seen these explanations in some way, shape or form. Azar is the complete package. I appreciate the many opportunities for speaking practice.

It is a very elaborated work. Even cannot cover everything, the book shows basics English grammar with clear descriptions, sentences, and excercises step-by-step, guiding through out Chapters with fine pictures that make learning becomes more enjoyable. This is a great book for self-learning for beginner on English.
