My Dyson works like it did when it was new!
The bristles on the beater brush of my Dyson had worn completely away and I had to order this whole assembly because ordering just the beater brush bar is not an option for my model. Having read the reviews, I warned my husband it was going to be a complicated repair but YouTube videos were available to help him. He watched the videos, carefully disassembled the vacuum making sure to keep track of the various parts and put everything back together in about 2.5 hours. He said it was challenging but the You Tube videos were very helpful. After it was repaired, my vacuum works like it did when it was new in 2011. Not only is the beater brush new, the vacuum pushes easier and the suction has improved. I hadn't realized the performance had decreased that much until this repair was made. It's like having a new Dyson all over again!

For the mechanically inclined and patient only...
Upon changing this item, my vacuum worked again. The job was not easy. Video online just to show you how to do it is 40 minutes (20 minutes to remove the old part and 20 minutes to install the new one). The entire job including familiarizing myself with the videos took about 3 hours and everything went relatively smoothly. the job requires bending and stretching numerous plastic pieces that if you are not careful, you could break or cut so you need to take your time. You will need a torq screw driver, a flathead screw driver, at least 3 small cable ties and a wire nipper to cut and trim the cable ties. The part itself is 5 stars. The difficult design to swap out is the only reason this is not a 5 star product.I don't have a hat on, but if I did, I would take it off in recognition of the vacuum repair people that do this work every day. What a pain. :)

Fixed my DC28 Animal.
This part fixed my DC28 Animal. My issue was a blinking red light when engaging the brush roller, which was a failed belt clutch. Installation is not easy. You must watch removal and re-installation videos on U-Tube to prevent breakage and assure success. Be methodical and patient in your approach. Is the DC28 vacuum over engineered? When you consider the complexities of its mechanisms, perhaps, but it does an amazing job at cleaning my carpets, once again.

Worth the cost
Have have 3 dogs who shed a frightening amount each week. We empty two full bins of hari each week in a 2K sqft house. So you get the idea our DC28 works hard for it's living. Five years on and lost a lot of suction rapidly. Filters seemed fine so replaced the brush motor head. The job a lot easier using the youtube videos. Took maybe 20 minutes in total. A lot of the suction is back but not 100%. Maybe 75-80%. Maybe the filters are bad. Replacing them now too.Anyone wondering why this part is so expensive you have to deconstruct it to see why. It's not just a bunch of plastic parts pushed together. I counted three separate motors, 5 roller bearings, two teflon belts, and a bunch of precision molding and gears in this one section. Darned thing is built to survive Armegeddon! One suggestion to anyone replacing this part. Pay special attention to the clear vacuum hoses. Both of mine had worn thru and several spots where the tube rubbed against the plastic body. I used a wide guage shrink-tube to seal them. Just a 'while you're at it' thing to look at.

OEM Part and it's perfect
After 2 hours of following 2 videos (1 to disassemble and another to reinstall), my baby girl is like brand new. Even the self-propel works again :) I highly recommend using the video on the major video channel titled: "DC28 Cleaner Head Replacement Removal" (Can we put links in here?) I had to replace the head because my bristles were missing and worn after ~10 years of use. In those ten years, the only part I've had to replace was the main long hose on the body. Not even the filters have needed replaced; just washed them. Now I have a new brush, belt, and clutch. Dyson makes a darn good product regardless of this part being so complex. For about $120, I have a brand new vacuum again and my cats will no longer reign the carpets. ;)

Will not fix certain Dyson Malfunctions...flashing red power light
My DC animal 28 had a malfunction that this won't fix. The symptoms were this: rotator head would spin/work normally for about 1-2 seconds, then quit rotating at the same time that the red power button would start flashing. Cycling the power would "reset" the system, but the symptoms would repeat regardless of carpet setting. So, I gave this a shot, swapping out the heads wasn't too tough. just watch the u tube videos and with moderate tool skills you can do it. You will need some very small zip ties, however, to hook up the vacuum tubes during reinstallation. Unfortunately, this part will not fix my problem with the symptoms described. I finally found an authorized repair place in Denver, and the cost to fix my problem exceeds the purchase price of a brand new vacuum. and the part that failed was the circuit board buried even deeper into the vacuum that isn't worth further attempts. Needless to say, i'll never buy another dyson product as my research has shown that these "problems" are engineered into the product to sustain aftermarket sales and repairs. never again!

Required repair before use
The gear housing was not aligned properly when I received the unit. Therefore, the clutch cover wouldn't install properly. After fixing the brand new cleaning head gear box alignment issue, the installation went smoothly. Some notes: There are two clear tubes which need reattachment. Note that the shorter tube has a larger nipple to connect to. Knowing this helps to avoid confusion when installing the tubes. Also, the tube stays on top of the clutch cover pinch them closed, thereby making the air muscle inoperative. Now the vacuum works like new, except the white lights are always blinking which indicates an obstruction. There are no obstructions so I don't know what that's all about.

It works as good as the original.
Keep in mind that you need to be quite mechanically inclined to replace this unit. It took me about 90 minutes to complete. The longest amount of time was determining how to remove the old unit, as it is not as intuitive as you might expect. Utilize YouTube for videos if you're having trouble. I would agree with one video poster, that this vacuum is way over-engineered. It shouldn't be this complex.
