The Best Of Witzend

Brilliant. Some of the comic book greats are here. Wood was years ahead of his time.

When Fantagraphics published The Complete Witzend, I considered buying it but held off as I wasn't sure of the quality. So when I knew 'The Best of Witzend' was coming out I thought it was right of me to wait. If Witzend was so great, surely the Best of Witzend would be outstanding. If this is The Best of Witzend, the whole series must be disappointing. There's an interesting story behind the creation of Witzend with Wally Wood seeking creative freedom for himself and his contemporaries, but that alone doesn't make for a satisfying read. Inadvertently, the stories in The Best of Witzend makes the case for editorship. I salute Wally Wood for initiating this self-published comic and all of the contributing artists in Witzend are legends, but not because of the work in Witzend.
