Tasking but enjoyable
Reading Karl Barth is always a task. That being said it is always an enjoyable task. Rather than his in-depth theological and biblical exposition, this brief volume is more of a tools of the trade. It conveys tips and tricks (wrong word) for biblical exposition. He reviews some well known preachers in a time where historical criticism reigned and true biblical exposition is rare. Though brief it is dense and may need to be read and re read in small doses. Still, an essential tool!

Questionable Book
Read Time: 2 1/2 hoursReview: This is a decent book on the foundations of homiletics, yet a lot of the content in this book is dangerous. Barth talks about the Bible 'becoming' the Word of God, and much of what he has to say may lead the reader in a direction that does not give God's Word proper authority in their life. Barth was the most influential writer on theology and the Bible in the 20th century, and this work comes from a series of lectures given in 1932-1933. The wisdom and practical pastoral guidance in this work is admirable, and it is translated in a way that is accessible for most learned audiences. Overall, this is a good work on preaching and communicating God's Word, but because of the questionable content, I would recommend John Stott or Haddon Robinson instead of this work.

A Must for Reformed Preachers
It's Barth, how could it not be excellent! This was a required text for a preaching class, but it delivered a spiritual message as well.
