Control
These soil sensors allow for better dialing in of soil moisture and go hand in hand with the ecowitt WiFi gateway which hooks directly to your Internet router, the info you get definitely helps new growers get better in a shorter time and it can even help the seasoned gardener to take they're garden to the next level

Works but poor range
I bought this to complement my Ecowitt weather station and several other sensors. I noticed that this sensor has a much shorter range than my other sensors and I had to move my gateway for it to pick up the signal. After that, it works fine and gives readings that seem plausible. Time will tell how good the battery life is.

Great add-on for a weather station
I was going away on a month-long holiday and needed a way to automate the monitoring and watering of my plants. There are loads of DIY solutions on Amazon that use a simple controller or Arduino, but none have an easy interface for me to monitor remotely. This seems to be the only one from a reputable brand with the ability to connect to WiFi (via a bridge) and I already have an Ecowitt weather station, so the cost of the bridge and the setup is already covered. Make sure you use a fresh battery to set up the sensor. After setup, a rechargeable battery can be used and it will continue to work down to 0.9V. UPDATE 2023: Make sure you use the rubber cap hidden underneath the box to cover the battery door; otherwise, there could be water ingress in rainy weather.

Very good!
Very easy to setup, literally slipped an AA battery into the unit and it appeared on my ecowitt app. I placed it in a glass of water and waited a minute or so and saw it updated to 100% moisture, so I assume it works. I have now inserted it next to a pot planted Acer tree and it indicated a 21% moisture level - Acers supposedly like a 20-40% moisture level so I've setup a Home Assistant automation to turn on my irrigation when it hits below 20 and turn off around 30% so far working great!

Great super easy piece of kit
An excellent product to add you to your Ecowitt weather station (up to 8 soil moisture sensors in total can be added to the HP2551/HP3500/HP3501stations) which is is painless to pair (just connect the battery!) also super easy to accurately calibrate. Extraordinary battery from a single AA cell and a broadcasting range of 100m and updates every 70 seconds makes this a really useful add-on for any keen gardener or farmer for inside or outside use.

Works well but poor build quality
This is dead easy to use, pairs well with the gateway, and reliably sends data to it. I haven't gone to great lengths to calibrate it so I don't know how accurate it is, but it reads low values after prolonged dry spells and higher values after rainfall or watering the garden, so it at least passes a basic face validity check. My main problem with it is that it is not well made and breaks easily. I've already got through 2 of them in less than a year. If you can put it in a bit of soil that is unlikely ever to be touched by anything, then so much the better.

Polecam.

This review evaluates the “WH51 Soil Moisture Sensor” made by ECOWITT. The product was shipped with no excessive or wasteful packaging. What’s in the box: one (1) WH51 soil moisture sensor, and an owner’s manual. I will preface this review by saying that I’m a Country Boy whose entire life has revolved around flower and food gardens. Any gardener will tell you that the quality of your soil is instrumental for crop growth. I recently purchased an Ecowitt WittBoy weather station that supports a multitude of add-on sensors, this soil moisture sensor being one of them. For years I have done away without using a moisture meter due to wildly inaccurate readings I would get; so I was eager to try this unit out. First impressions: The overall quality of the meter looks very good, with a durable hard plastic ABS casing. The end cap unscrews to house an “AA” battery (not included, lithium recommended). The weatherproof end cap is further protected by a slide-on rubber cap. It is imperative to note that this is not a standalone sensor; you need an Ecowitt monitoring hub. The set-up was easy: install a new battery, open the Ecowitt APP that you set up with your monitoring hub, and add the WH51 sensor. Within a minute the sensor calibrates and sends real-time data back to you via your monitoring hub/APP. I bought this sensor to specifically monitor my hanging potted plants. I tested unit one of my pots by placing it as instructed. After acclimating (about 10-20 minutes) the sensor reported that the soil moisture content was 33%. To check the accuracy of the sensor, I installed an old-school analog probe in the same pot. After acclimating (about 10-20 minutes) the analog probe reported that the soil moisture content was 35%. The sensor appears to be accurate within reason. The WH51 sensor removes the guesswork about when and how much to water. My only suggestion to the manufacturer is to include a lug to tie a tether with a tag so that you don’t lose/forget about the sensor when you dump the pot! Since this really doesn’t take away from the usability of the product, I will not deduct any stars for it. In order to determine long-term meter durability and accuracy, I intend to monitor this product over the next 4-6 months. Should anything change over this period, I will update this review accordingly. Cost-effectiveness and value: Overall I am very satisfied with the product; it is compact, portable, and easy to use. At a current price of $32.99 (plus a $3 off coupon), it is of great value. In summary: the “WH51 Soil Moisture Sensor” made by ECOWITT is well made, compact, accurate, and easy to use. It delivers all this at a reasonably low price. This product is a must-have for the avid gardener. I would recommend this product without reservation. Pros 👍: ✔ Well made from quality materials. ✔ Very easy to set up and use. ✔ Sensor reports back every 60 seconds (as configured by your monitoring hub). ✔ Uses one (1) AA battery. ✔ IP66 water resistant rated. ✔ Removes the guesswork out of when to water. ✔ Accurate. ✔ Great price point, good value. Cons👎: ✘ None! Manufacturer Suggestions 🖐: ✔ Provide a lug to tie a tether marker to avoid loss.

The ECOWITT WH51 is a simple but very useful soil moisture sensor. Setup was quick, and it has been working reliably ever since. It gives me the data I need for watering decisions, and it integrates nicely into my weather setup. Great value for the price.
