Does the router have to be plugged into this. I have sn 8 port already but want to branch more cables off from upstairs.

If a connection to internet is required, some sort of routing will be needed to connect the internal and external networks together (as well as to provide NAT, etc.). yeap just use ethernet cable from booster to the hub job done then connect whatever devices you want to the available ports
