The story of Rita is remarkable. A young child who is brave, courageous and selfless. She will do what she must to protect her family and save herself from the horrors of war. This is a great read.

I found this book in the middle school/young adult memoir section of the library. Intriguing writing with a complex narrative, Rita created an inspirational reading experience. There are several sections that include sexual encounters that Rita has herself or witnessed with others. I would put this book more in the late high school/college range and up for age.I connected with Rita immediately and rode the emotions of experiencing a new world as she simultaneously lived as a prisoner of the camps and as an administrator for the Japanese. It gave me a completely new perspective on the war when the prisoners actually have beneficial and friendly connections with their captors. It opened up a part of history rarely seen in WW2. Definitely recommend it to an age appropriate audience.

This book was very well written and it was hard not think that you were there with her. She writes very candidly and vividly when recalling these experiences that happened 50 years ago. I found it hard to put down and read the entire book in three days. Of course, I had to work a couple days so that cut into my reading time. All in all, this is a great freshmen effort and I can't wait for the next installment. It felt like there should be a next chapter to the amazing life. Thanks for the chance to read a private part of your life, Rita!
