I haven't quite been all through the book as yet but I have read and used enough to know that it is well worth the price. I am largely a self taught trumpet player although I did have lessons when I was a youngster about 75 years ago and was first-chair trumpet in my high school band nearly seventy years ago. After laying the trumpet aside after college I took it up again about fifteen years ago. I play primarily for my own pleasure and occasional specials at church and other functions. Having said all that to define my category I will say that it's not to late for an old dog to learn new tricks. The book is the most comprehensive of any that I have seen. It covers everything from trumpet history to accessories and everything in between. Range, endurance, special effects, you name it, the topic is addressed. I think it would be invaluable not only for a beginner but also for a long-time amateur like myself. In only a few days I have learned much I didn't know. The author presents everything in a light-hearted, friendly and and even funny manner so it's not like the usual instruction book. I've even learned how to blow a horse whinny, I doubt if I find and occasion to blow that in church but now I know how it's done :). With his detailed instruction how to "clean up your axe" I was inspired yesterday to take my Yamaha apart and wash the horn and parts in soap and water in my laundry tub. Of course I knew how to clean a trumpet but I had never seen such detailed and thorough instructions. All-in-all, It's just a fun and useful book for trumpet players and teachers of all levels of experience.

One of the first things I'd like to say is the author has done a stupendous job of making a book that is not only easy to understand but fun-to-read. With this book you look forward to your next practice session!I picked up this book after going though other trumpet learning series. This easy-to-understand book is very thorough and contains a ton of information! The efficient learning method will take you farther in a shorter amount of time. To give you an idea of how much more is in this book, he has a full chapter on just breathing - try finding that in any other book.But don't worry, he doesn't just teach you how to breath. In addition to breathing, he also covers double tonguing and triple tonguing. For fun, he has a chapter near the end of the book on all those fancy little things that have always amazed you such as flutter tonguing and the all so classic horse whinny!Finally, if you go to [...] the author has kindly put up all the sound clips to go along with the book - plus videos too!This book is truly worth more than five stars =)

Very good book, very well written. I was looking for a book for a beginning trumpet player who is an adult. This seems to be it. I plan to give a copy to my nephew who wants to learn to play. The only negative is that I think Mr. Harnum should have included a little more music in the back, but he does reference a lot of method books to help a new student get started.

Like many amateur trumpet players, I have sought all manner of "expert" publications, hoping to get an inside into the secrets of achieving success with this difficult instrument. This book was a great asset in chasing the dream. Recommended.

This is an absolutely fantastic book. I just started to learn to play the trumpet, and this book is part of the fun. You can learn about tricks, what music to get in order to listen, techniques, notes, etc. I use it when I am not playing and it keeps me interested. Every trumpet should be sold with this book. This is like a user's manual. You will also learn about troubleshooting, maintenance and cleaning. With this book you will not feel lost and will be prepared for your 1st classes.

I found this an excellent resource for restarting my cornet playing. I had forgotten a lot and perhaps things have changed. This book is well worth the price and time.

The book is well crafted. It covers a lot of territory for a beginning trumpeter, and I have found I pretty much use it as my go to book on how to play the trumpet. It is easy to understand and the best part, if you follow the instructions, while you might not become an instant Chris Boddi, you will be able to play and practice the right way. Very informative book. Well worth the price.

I've been reading this book for a while and every time I go for it, find interesting and helpful advice for my playing. I highly recommend it, not only for beginners, but for all players and tutors.

A great read. Very well written and very informative. Easy to understand and makes learning simple and fun. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in playing trumpet.
