Teddy Pendergrass Documentary Review
The Documentary of Teddy Pendergrass’s life does not disappoint. If you’re a Boomer or a Gen-Xer you might appreciate it a little more. However Teddy’s melodic deep, sensual tone brings an immediate smile to your face and will take you down memory lane, to the 60’s soulful music that was coming from both Philadelphia and Detroit’s Hittsville USA at the same time. This documentary is also a testament to the strength of the human spirit when we consciously choose to triumph over our adversities. You will laugh, you will cry, you time travel, you will conger up conspiracy theory’s, and you will cheer Teddy’s triumph over adversity

Excellent!!
Very moving documentary to the life and music of Teddy Pendergrass.. The vintage footage, especially the recording of "Lady", was a treasure! I have always loved his music but now I have an even deeper appreciation for his life and contributions. Very well done! Bravo!

Good stuff
Good footage. I only wish they would have interviewed a few other folks, most notably Stephanie Mills or Sharon Paige. There are other choices that I wish they would have made, with regard to story telling, but all in all this was a pretty darn good doc. I'm grateful to have watched it.

Good job!
I particularly enjoyed the interviews by Gamble and Huff, former Blue Notes, and some interesting elements that I did not know regarding the politics surrounding Teddy's life with cops, his recorded drumming with Little Royal, and his run ins with unsavory characters. I highly recommend this video.

Wow!!!!
This was truly a great DVD I have always heard that there was a lot of bad things going on behind the scenes in the Music business. Boy did this bring it to the surface. I just wish that Teddy Pendergrass could have seen his dreams come true and he could have had the success he should have gotten. He was one of the greatest singers I have ever heard.

A film of many layers
This is an honest portrayal of the personal life of Teddy Pendergrass, set against the backdrop of his musical talent. The two conflate following his accident that leaves him paralysed and contemplating suicide. His renaissance resulting in him taking to the stage again during Live Aid and for several years thereafter, is testament to his force of character that see him almost retrain as a singer. As with many artists of his calibre, there are the less attractive elements: the drug taking and association with what is termed the Black Mafia and the womanising: the latter probably inevitable given the hypersexualisation that reinforces his vocal slickness. The viewer gains greater insight into the machinery of the Philadelphia music industry, the African American chitlin circuit and Black celebrity of the 1970s and '80s. A must for anyone interested in Soul music.
