Fact Vs Fiction?
Repeatedly, I questioned where this book was more fiction than fact. His close encounters with the bears, talking down an aggressive bear by telling the bear he loved him and trying to save them, and living in a tent on the grass lands with hundreds of bear grazing and going through; well, it just seems like a story. However, I watched, "Gizzly Man" and saw with my own eyes, Timothy did get near the bear and even had that little ornery fox, Tim "befriended." The book is interesting but he's left out his research he talks about doing when not in Alaska. I'm saddened about his death by a bear but it was only a matter of time. What's even sadder, a bear lost his life because Tim felt the calling to interrupt their natural habitat. His being there and getting to close was not natural. Both died because of this. The book isn't very long and an easy read.

If You Liked The Movie...
Ever since reading about the unfortunate event that put Timothy Treadwell and his companion on the "public map in a major way" there seemed to be more questions than answers in his life's story as it came to light. I actually thought he was Australian...Werner Herzog's stitchwork of Timothy's bear movies allowed us a very rare and wonderful glimpse into an incredible force in Timothy's life. But, the movie is only a doorway that invites anyone who is moved and inspired by it to step across the threshold and find out more about Timothy Treadwell. This book is a good next step into that world. It gives a little more insight into Timothy's own thoughts and covers a number of years worth of summers with his favorite bears. It has the unmistaken light tone of Timothy's reasoning and his adventurous nature. He describes a variety of encounters and observations, all with his youthful glee. In the literary sense there may be a lot wrong with this book, but if you liked the movie you will probably enjoy it, and that is what counts. While it still leaves a lot of questions about Timmy unanswered, it is an addition to his bear movies, and has a few self-described insights into his own personality. One can argue how much negative impact Timothy's presence had on the bears, and if you are looking for that debate this book may not be for you. To get to hear some other sides of Timothy's character and life, you'll have to read some of the other books that are available on this subject. Here, reading this book, you get to be with Timothy for a while longer, and for me it was hard to put down.

Good Read
I found this book a very good read. Timothy Treadwell was dedicated to bears and in my opinion should have used this energy in different manners to study bears he so loved. Fantastic photography and documentation regarding mating, off spring and general behavioral information.

Gave it all he had to give
This is a unique publication. A well meaning man talks to brown grizzly bears in a sing song voice while only a few feet away from them ! It is charming yet so dangerous it is hard to believe he was not killed during his thirteen years of being a visitor in their home. TT's determination to make a difference in helping Grizzlies live lives safe from predation and habitat invasion by humans is admirable. His terrible end, far worse than anything he would have imagined, make the work grim but I have admiration for his efforts. I'm not too sure the part in which he scares off poaches is accurate, but the book and the Animal Planet series Grizzly Man Diaries show one man's attempt to cross what may be an insurmountable barrier between wild animals and humans. He well knew that in his own words, " It would be too much to hope that the bears loved him ", but he lived and died trying to make it so.

So So
In my opinion the book was so, so. However, I thought that if you ever plan to go into bear country, you should buy this book. Tim described body language for bears in an attack mode and gave some good examples of techniques you can use to survive a potential bear attack. However, that being said, they don't always work on all bears--look at what happened to Tim.In reading his book, I couldn't help but wonder if he indeed had a death wish. This guy slept in a pup tent with half-ton grizzlies snoring outside his tent at night--crazy. If I hadn't seen Herzog's movie with its live footage of Tim with the bears, I wouldn't of believe what Tim wrote.Side Note: I recently had my first bear encounter. It was with a young black bear, about 200 lbs in weight. When I first saw him, he stopped and looked at me. Timothy said sing to calm the bear, so I sang. The bear ran for his life! So I don't know what this proved. (I filmed the event: YouTube Black Bear on Snipsic Lake)

Bears Best Friend
No one knows better than Timothy Treadwell, the adventures he faced every day in the wild woods of Alaska. His deep love for the bears are evident as one reads the pages of this book. The chances he took with the wild animal are almost beyond description. It is as if he became one of them, often overstepping his boundaries. A very interesting book, maybe because it is factual. It is hard to believe that one might become so consumed by these beautiful but ferocious bears. His drive to protect them finally became the one thing that brought him to his demise. It is a great book and well worth the read.

Answered a lot of questions
I bought this book to see if Timothy Treadwell was bonkers. But he was perfectly aware of the dangers he faced while living amongst these bears, and knew that probably he would die while studying them. His only fault in my opinion was bringing the gal along. He should have faced his fate alone.

parfait
A lire absolument car cette histoire, vraie, sort vraiment de l'ordinaire. Ce que vit l'auteur et les risques pris, dans un contexte compliqué et son schéma de "rédemption" tiennent en haleine.La fin... prévisible ?
