Masterclass: Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman's photographs are among the most unique and compelling of the 20th century. His signature style of photographing his subjects within their own environment, combined with an eye for composition that may be unrivaled in portraiture, created stunning images. I'm not sure there's an image in this 250p+ retrospective that I don't love. Buy it - you will not be disappointed.

I wish I knew how to succinctly explain to the Noobies on the block that a few dollars spent to review good photography and fine art is worth so much more than than a used $200 lens and 1000 likes on Facebook. If they would spend time with a book like Newman's so much more could be gained. I found it extremely well produced with tons of great photographic content. Trying to emulate great photographers is not cheating, it's learning.

Newman's photos are wonderful. However the design of the book is very, very poor.Photos on the right page of the book usually fill most of the 11.7 inches of the page,while the photos on the left side of the page are mostly only 3 or 4 inches tall.I WANT TO SEE ARNOLD NEWMAN'S PHOTOGRAPHS, not the book designer'spoor work!

This book is amazing, both the images and the copy are informative and inspiring. I'd recommend this to any Newman fans or anyone out there with an interest in environmental portraiture.

Arnold Newman is the master of portrait photography and this book is an excellent representation of his skill. I recommend this book to anyone interested in photography, portraits and art. Superb.

Excellent print quality that largely captures the essence of Newman's excellent portraits. An excellent resource for photography students learning the fine points of portrait photography.

I recommend this book to any Arnold Newman's photography fan. The quality is superb and the images are unique only as Arnold Newman can do it.

I really enjoy Newman’s use of the environment in which he shoots each subject. The portraits are almost equal parts the environment and the sitter. Many of the images look like energetic collaborations between the sitter and Newman. I feel there is a real warmth from the sitters in that regard. There’s a lot of inspiring imagery throughout and it’s nice to see a body of work that transcends the time in which it was created.

I bought this book knowing little about it's content. I am somewhat disappointed that it is mainly portraits of artists that I have never heard of. So if you are interested in what is largely just a collection of Arnold Newman black and white photographs then you won't be disappointed.

If you love photography, you will love this book. I was already an Arnold Newman fan, and this book has increased my admiration for this master of composition.It is well edited, with similar images placed together so Newman's thinking is even clearer. Some well-written and interesting text gives us more insight into the man, and Newman quotes are interspersed with the pictures. At the back is a nice index of his subjects etc.

The work in this book is fantastic, and Newman's is a great body of work to study. The only place I feel something is slightly missing is the book contains little material by Newman himself on his own working process and inspiration. This is supplemented, however, by illustrative stories by those who worked with Newman.I found William A.
