santas gift
My son loves lego and has been asking for this for some time. He loves to be challenged and at the same time learn something new about building and creating. As he has been building this one he comes over to us to show is his progression and finally his accomplishment. The smile on his face has been priceless.

Nice kit
This is a nice entry level Lego kit. I thought it would have a better manual, but it was okay.

Great for adult and kid fans of LEGO! Check prices first though
I am an adult LEGO fan and I bought this set for myself. When I first heard about these sets, I wasn't too interested in it. Having collected LEGO on and off since my childhood, I am kind of wary of adding to my collection especially since this set contained a lot of odd green and purple pieces. On top of that, the models didn't really appeal to me. However, having read a lot of positive reviews about this series I decided to give the first set a try.I am not disappointed. The sturdy box comes with a sorting tray, brick separator, a large book with instructions to three space models and of course the LEGO bricks and minifigure. While there really isn't anything new with the parts selection, you do get a great variety of wedges, slopes and arches to play with. While the lime green and purple didn't really appeal to me, it's a great color scheme and the parts are colored in such a way that you don't really have to worry about color schemes when you design your own models. The body is white, while the trim will be lime green and with a touch of purple here and there. While it may not seem like much, it is a great selection of pieces to play around with and try the different techniques in the book. The manual details three different spaceships, highlighting different instances of two techniques: locking and sideways building. Locking is an essential technique that makes your model sturdy. Sideways building is as it sounds: changing the direction of certain pieces so they are sideways rather than vertical. Sideways building allows you to smooth out the design with the wedges or develop interesting structures that aren't possible with normal vertical building. These techniques, while essential, and are rather basic. These techniques are present throughout LEGO models so you have seen them before. What the book does is point them out to you and reinforce these techniques so that you consciously apply them in your own designs. The box is the same sort of box that the LEGO board games come in. Cardboad box but great for storage. The sorting tray while sturdier than the trays that come in Advent Calendar sets are still fragile. It suits its purposes though. One thing that I didn't like was that it was solid black which makes it difficult to spot darker-colored pieces. The brick separator is a nice touch - really appreciate that!I had bought this with the intent of using the box for more storage and adding the pieces to my collection. However, it's a great set to keep all on its own. There's something simple but refreshing about having a great but limited set of pieces to work with instead of having to dig through your entire collection for that one particular piece. It forces you to use your creativity to the pieces at your disposal. Also, it's a great set to tote around while traveling because it is very self-contained.I highly recommend this for young builders interested in their own designs rather than LEGO sets and adult builders who need a little push in developing their dormant LEGO interests and/or skills. My one caveat is that this set is exclusive to LEGO stores. You WILL overpay if you buy from a third-party seller on Amazon so do yourself a quick favor and check the LEGO website or store for the actual price before buying.
