Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand Paperback – February 17, 2015

I got it because I need to complete the story of miles morales. Overall a great book part of the ultimate marvel universe.

Collected in this book are a bunch of titles all connected to the Cataclysm event: Where Galactus from the 616 (Main Marvel) Universe enters the 1610 (Ultimate Marvel) Universe and fuses with the Gah-lak-tus robotic swarm to become a threat that threatens not only their Earth, but all of existence as well. It's great how they arrange it, placing the chronologically and more vital Hunger titles first, followed by the 0.1 and main story and then following that up with all the tie ins from the Spider-man, Ultimates, and X-Men titles. They end it with Survive, a single title that serves as the launching pad for where the Ultimate Universe went following the event, which definitely shook up the status-quo.The art throughout the book was vibrant and colorful, and stood out in a lot of places. It was more muted in the Ultimates and X-men side stories, but it didn't take away from the book as a whole. The stories themselves are rather well paced and are written well, packing in a lot of backstory but making it more accessible to those who may not have a detailed understanding of the Ultimate Universe. The changes felt in this book were definitely felt later on, especially certain character changes and deaths, of which there are many (though not as many as Ultimatum). Unfortunately I think the Ultimate universe went downhill from here but, it was a fun read nonetheless. It's interesting in retrospect, given now we know the ultimate fate of the Ultimate Universe

You get a LOT of material in this collection for your money. 20 great issues collected. Great stuff.First off, the collection is in the BEST order possible in regards to reading.You get the four issues of the HUNGER mini-series at the beginning (since the events in HUNGER set up the devastating events that occur later in the Cataclysm collection) followed by CATACLYSM # 0.1.After that, you get the MAIN story which is CATACLYSM: THE ULTIMATES' LAST STAND (which is a five issue mini-series involving Spider-man, the X-men, the Ultimates, and MANY others from Marvel's ultimate universe).After the main story ends, then you get the SIDE STORIES, which would be the three Cataclysm mini-series (three issues each) with Ultimate Spider-man, The Ultimates, and Ultimate X-men.Finally, you get the epilogue, which is SURVIVE # 1 (which wraps everything up in a very emotional way).This entire CATACLYSM collection contains 20 (yes, TWENTY) ultimate comics in all.I know others have stated that they wanted the three side stories and the main story put in release order as oppose to the way they were organized in this collection. But if Marvel were to do that, the entire collection would be a CONFUSING mess to read. The reason for that is the three side stories have their own things going on. While they do tie into the main story, they are best read SEPARATELY from the main story and SEPARATELY from the other side stories (despite the connections they all have with each other since they deal with the cataclysm at hand).Yes, Cataclysm is a crossover (and a VERY important crossover for the Ultimate universe which has some SERIOUS permanent effects on the entire line of books) but Marvel did the RIGHT thing by placing the main story SEPARATELY from the three side stories.As for the story itself, it is FANTASTIC.Galactus (THE Galactus) is the main villain of this book and he is NOT playing around. That's all I'm going to say.If you have been following all the Ultimate books since the 2011 relaunch (with Miles Morales as Spider-man, Kitty Pryde as the leader of the X-men and having to experience devastating events like "World War X", and the Ultimates (Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Nick Fury, and the rest of the gang in their ongoing series)facing some of the most insane challenges in the history of Marvel comics) then Cataclysm will serve as a wonderful treat for most of you.Even if you haven't been following the Ultimate books (I'm aware many people left after the conclusion of 2009's Ultimatum mini-series) I would still highly recommend reading Cataclysm. It's THAT great. It's VERY easy to follow from beginning to end, even if you haven't picked up an ultimate book in years. Granted, you might have to do some quick research on Wikipedia if you have no clue who Miles Morales is and why he's Spider-man in Marvel's ultimate universe or are wondering about a few other things. Otherwise, the Cataclysm collection is VERY easy to get into for newcomers, even if you haven't read an ultimate book in the last several years.Cataclysm is a great story from beginning to end.Read it, enjoy it, and hang on for one hell of an emotional ride.I STRONGLY recommend you buy this collection and read it the minute you get it.It's fantastic.

What happens when the world-devouring Galactus makes his way from the prime Marvel Universe into Marvel's Ultimate Universe? That's the plot of this collection from writers Brian Michael Bendis and Joshua Hale Fialkov.For the most part, this compilation moved pretty quickly and was a lot of fun to read. I commend Bendis on his very ingenious use of the Ultimate X-Men's Kitty Pryde in the unlikely but exciting conflict. This was a fun story that could have been even better, if not for lazy reprint editing--or lack thereof.This compilation collects a 'family' of miniseries(plural) under the CATACLYSM umbrella. The heart and soul of the story is chronicled in THE HUNGER (4 issues) and CATACLYSM: THE ULTIMATES' LAST STAND (5 issues) and the CATACLYSM 0.1 one-shot. I will also include the SURVIVE one-shot which serves as sort of an epilogue. My problem is with the UKTIMATE X-MEN, ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN and ULTIMATES tie-in minis that were also included.The reading chronology would have been much smoother if the editors had cared enough to splice these tie-ins sequentially between the proper issues of the core series instead of just randomly chucking them in at the end. As it stands, the first half of the book depicts the formidable threat of Galactus and its staggering conflict and resolution while the second half presents these tie-ins which, chronologically, were actually taking place DURING Galactus' attack. So by the time we're reading these tie-ins, we already know the outcome of the great conflict, so reading them is largely moot at this point. In and of themselves, they're not that spectacular, coming off more as redundant filler than anything of a must-read caliber. Placing them in their proper event sequence would have made these tie-ins a bit more engaging.So I give this one three stars. It could have gotten four if the reading had been more chronological. But the book IS worth reading, and I will probably reread the first half of the book again and again.

Gostei bastante da história, da forma como Galactus foi parar no universo Ultimate e em como toda a história se desenrolou. A publicação também está excelente, com capa dura e veio sem nenhum arranhão.

interesting story and art, it matched my expectations, even if the «merging» of galactus seems a bit far fetched (yes, I'm aware of the ridiculousness of that last part...)

En fait, cet événement vient clore la deuxième ère de toutes les séries "ultimate" en cours jusque là depuis "Ultimatum".'Hunger' met en avant le personnage de Rick Jones, jeune terrien de l'univers "ultimate" doté bien malgré lui de pouvoirs incommensurables et de responsabilités cosmiques qu'il préfèrerait ne pas avoir à assumer. Il se retrouve projeté au cœur d'une opposition entre Krees et Chitauris au moment d'une attaque de l'essaim de Gah Lak Tus, lui-même "en transe" compte tenu de l'arrivée imminente, via une "faille", du Galactus "de chez nous" ! Et ce dernier a faim, très faim ! Galactus absorbe l'essaim Gah Lak Tus pour en faire son héraut de malheur, et ni les Krees, ni les Chitauris, ni Rick Jones, ni le Surfeur d'Argent "ultimate" ne pourront arrêter la progression de Galactus vers... la Terre de l'univers "ultimate" et en particulier, le New Jersey.'Cataclysm #0.1' se centre sur Sam Wilson de l'univers "ultimate" et sa dulcinée, la Vision du même univers. La Vision tente de faire barrage à Galactus...La mini-série 'Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand' constitue le cœur de cet événement, avec Miles Morales, les Ultimates, les FF, les X-Men tous réunis en opposition à Galactus, à qui même Thor n'arrive pas à faire entendre raison. Le Cap' et Iron Man vont devoir se résoudre à faire appel au pire des personnages de l'univers "ultimate" pour tenter une solution, avec le gamin Spidey en guise de surveillant... Je n'en dis pas plus, car ce serait enchaîner les spoilers...Les trois séries en trois numéros suivent - Spider-Man, Ultimates (avec Nick Fury et une équipe "alternative" d'ultimates incluant Hercules) et les X-Men (ce qu'il en reste...) -, pour présenter les mêmes événements que ceux connus via la série centrale, mais bien entendu sous des angles différents. Les trois épisodes de Spider-Man sont essentiels pour comprendre ce qui va suivre après cet événement pour ce personnage (cf. notamment 'All-New Ultimates Volume 1: Power for Power' et 'Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 1: Revival').Le 'Survive! #1' conclusif, dont le titre dit bien ce qu'il veut dire, porte le deuil des héros tombés au front. Et dans l'univers "ultimate", les héros meurent vraiment ! Apparemment... Et là, en matière de "mort de héros", "on a du lourd" ! 'Nuff Said!Au plan des dessins, si on met à part l'excellent Morales et un Kirk qui s'efforce d'élever son niveau de jeu jusque là sympathique, Di Giandomenico et Martinez n'impressionnent aucunement tandis que Quinones manque d'élégance. Mais le pitch se tient, si l'on admet cette question des "failles", et les différents récits retiennent l'attention. Si, de surcroît, vous appréciez particulièrement tel ou tel personnage, je pense spécialement à Spider-Man, cette lecture vous sera agréable et nécessaire.
