I am not an experienced portrait sketcher but this book really has great drawings that provide enough guidance so my work actually looks as though I know what I am competent!

I like this book very much. I checked it out of the library and then decided it would would be a good reference for drawing.

I've been drawing for years and have really taken an interest in this style of art. However, I found this book to be very advanced and hard for me to learn from. On some pages she tries to break it down a bit but most it is reference art. It does cover different art mediums very vaguely. I would have liked it to have had more on light, shadow, and cross hatching.

I already do quite a lot of pencil portraits as an amateur artist, often for friends and family, so the skills are there but more by instinct than learning, When I spotted this in my local library and I decided to borrow it and found it so helpful I bought my own copy (sadly had to get it second-hand as out of print, and it is less than perfect).Carol Massey covers a variety of materials, goes into details about shading, individual facial features, and methods of approaching each portrait as well as getting dimensions right.Recommended.

I bought this book as I had seen a few Carole Massey T.V. programmes and had liked her style and admired her work. I have to say that I was a little bit let down as the entire book read a bit like "Here's what I have done" whereas I wanted "Here is a step by step of how I did what I did". Expectations too high on my half maybe? Okay I'll take that, so for anyone who is looking for what I was looking for then this is probably not the book for you. Anyone else could basically look at her web site to look at her work as it's all there.

This is an excellent book by Carole Massey throughly recommended.

I love this book!! I borrowed it from the library and liked it so much I bought my own, I couldn't bear to give the original back! Its very clear and easy to follow and following it's advice I improved my drawing pretty quickly. Its excellent.
