Henry Winkler and Sally Field play two off-center characters who find love when they least expect it in the moving comedy Heroes. Jack (Winkler) is a troubled, yet high-spirited Vietnam vet who embarks on a cross-country odyssey to open a worm farm and prove his own self-worth. En route, he befriends Carol (Field) attempting to "sort things out" before she marries an old flame. Their laugh and tear-filled adventures, including a high-speed run-in with a footloose army buddy (Harrison Ford), become the life-affirming story of two people who find themselves when they find each other.]]>

Awesome movie for your collection
This is a classic movie which I love that belongs in my movie collection. The story of this wounded soldier coming to terms with his life is, at times, hard to watch. However, Sally Field gives an incredible performance on how she helps him. It truly is an amazing watch for an old movie!

"CARRY ON MY WAYWARD SON" has been RESTORED on the Blu-ray!
I bought this Blu-ray because of a review implying that Kansas's "Carry On My Wayward Son" ending had been restored to this very special film -- and it HAS!(But to be clear: just on the Blu-ray, not the previously-released DVD.)This was my favorite movie of the 1970s. It is so moving, and sweet, and genuine -- and a young Henry Winkler & Sally Field were absolutely stellar in it.But later marketers stripped Kansas's final music out. (Didn't want to pay royalties to Kansas? Hope they're paying now!). So I was stuck with a decades-old VHS I'd recorded from TV. And the manufacturers were stuck with DECADES of our complaints.Thank you, to whoever made the executive decision to put that track back in! I watched this version all the way through, prepared to be disappointed... and I wasn't.If you were a fan of the original film, BUY this Blu-ray.

Different reaction
Loved this movie whenever it was released, but did not have the same impact these many years later. Also disappointed Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son” was absent on the soundtrack.

Vintage 70's feature film
I recall seeing this as a teen at the drive in and not realizing that Henry Winkler was the same guy who played the Fonz on Happy Days. In other words he looked a lot different in Heroes than on tv .This film is one of those it feels like the 70's and that's a good thing in my book.I have a great deal of respect for films made in that era both big budget and exploitation. Anyways the story is really well done you will relate to the 2 main characters stressed out possibly crazy Vietnam vet Jack played by Winkler and his at first foil then later lover Carol played by the wonderful Sally Field.I have always had a soft spot for Sally Field and appreciate many of the films she did along the way. Jack is a loose cannon being held at a V.A. in NYC for those who suffered mental or physical issues due to being in Vietnam. He has a plan he and his fellow platoon mates want to start a worm farm in Eureka California where one of the men was from. So in his quest to get together with the gang he plots an escape from the hospital.A grand chase through 70's downtown Manhattan ensues and Jack finally eludes his would be captors. Jack makes it to the Penn Station Bus terminal and using his meager funds purchases a bus ticket to Kansas City where he's to meet one of his old mates. But the bus is overbooked and Jack is left to fight with Carol over the last ticket.Carol is going to wed an old flame but is getting cold feet and wants to take off and be free to figure things out. So somehow Jack manages to bribe his way onto the bus even though there's no seat available. He then proceeds to torture both Carol and the bus driver Mel for most of the duration of the trip. Carol is wary of the eccentric Jack and his ways are whacky but generally harmless.Jack also has a bunch of worms with him as a starter kit so to speak.Eventually Carol softens on jack and they end up together stranded in Kansas City. There Jack gets together with the first platoon member played by Harrison Ford. Here we start to see the toll that Vietnam took on these men's psyches .Harrison's character is a do nothing slob who owns a race car but is afraid to race it.He also was to have raised some rabbits for the worm farm as rabbit pellets are good nutrients for worms. While Jack is high energy and hyper his buddy is the opposite lethargic and sour. This is an omen for the rest of the film as Jack and Carol go in search of the rest of the guys and find out that things are not well with any of them. The climatic scene at the last house in Eureka is outstanding and the acting of Winkler and Field is off the charts good. I won't raise a fuss about the film makers decision to not pay the band Kansas royalties to use their hit song Carry On (Wayward Son) .I mean any classic rock station across the country plays that song as a staple anyhow. My only quibble is that the film could have been edited tighter as it runs near 2 hours and there's a good 15-20 minutes of tedious action that could have been edited out without hurting the story. If you are like me and like 70's cinema.like both Winkler and Field and want a movie that is both funny and sad then I recommend Heroes it's an under the radar gem.

Finding Your Way Back Home
There are many things to consider when measuring the significance of "Heroes". When the film was released in 1977 the U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia was four years removed yet Hollywood still had not seriously addressed the concerns of the returning soldiers. You would more than likely see the combat veterans treated like avenging angels a la Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver". It wasn't until 1978 with films like "Coming Home" and "The Deer Hunter" that the plight of our unsung heroes would be dealt with sensitively onscreen. Star Henry Winkler was best known then as a TV idol than as a serious movie star. Sally Field also had to deflect the television stigma as well as her gossip rag image as Burt Reynolds' girlfriend. Harrison Ford just came off the phenomenon of "Star Wars" after years as a bit player but wouldn't become a bona fide star until "Raiders of the Lost Ark" a few years later. The film works because of the sincerity of the performers in front of the camera and the technicians behind it. Winkler walks the tightrope in portraying a psychically wounded vet careful not to overplay his hand. This is the first film that Field is allowed to shine. Case in point would be the heartbreaking scene where she breaks off with her fiancée by telephone. Ford has a less showy but no less effective turn as Winkler's platoon mate. The film is efficiently directed by Jeremy Paul Kagan whose only previous screen credit was the underrated "Scott Joplin" wringing all the pathos and humor from James Carabatsos' excellent script. Some are dismissing this DVD issue because of the excision of Kansas' "Carry On My Wayward Son" from the soundtrack. I will add that the song is as essential to this film as "The Sounds of Silence" is to "The Graduate" or "Staying Alive" is to "Saturday Night Fever" though I'm not about to throw the baby out with the bathwater. This is an excellent film and demands to be seen.

My parents have been looking for a version with carry on wayward son. The blue ray version has the song at the end like the original . So if you’re looking for the legit version buy blue ray. My parents were satisfied with the film.
