"Beyond Category" - Incomparable Master of Flute de Pan
"Classics by Candlelight" is absolutely delightful collection that presents Gheorghe Zamfir, the unique master of ancient Flute de Pan performing along with Alessandro Scarlatti Orchestra some of the most beautiful and beloved classical favorites and few pieces that he wrote himself. I am especially impressed by "The Art of Violin" by Locatelli, Schubert's "Ave Maria", and "Concerto for flute and orchestra in C" by Cretry, "Adagio by Albinoni", and one of the best performances of Beethoven's enchanting Romance #2 I've ever heard. Zamfir's own three pieces, "Feerie", "Rumanian waltz", and "Forest dance" each possess incredibly deep and sensual mystery to them. When I listen to Zamfir playing, I am absolutely convinced that Flute de Pan was invented by the God of Nature, Pan - how else would we explain the divine sounds with both longing and promises for something miraculous to happen. It is not surprising for me at all that Zamfir performed the soundtrack for one of the most mysterious movies ever made, Peter Weir's "Picnic on Hanging Rock" (1975) where the hypnotizing sounds of his Flute de Pan lured the young teenage girls inside the mysterious and ominous rock - toward the destiny no one has been able to explain or to reveal.

The music is beautiful and it is worth buying. Most of the music is classical, which I am not really fond of. I wasn't thinking when I bought it. If you like classical music this is truly for you. As I said the music is out of this world

Breathtaking...
You cannot beat Zamfir for pan flute music. The instrument is breathtakingly lovely -- and he really does it justice. Not only is it good to listen to -- but it also makes a great backdrop of music too when one wants to be quiet, read or just rest.
