Q: How does this item work on photos?

It should work fine on photo paper....I've had a million trimmers, like most crafters, and this is by FAR the best....I've bought several of the specialty blades, as well..I have yet to change the original blade.

Q: How much pressure do you have to place on the rotary cutter in order for it to cut the paper? I have carpal tunnel and can't press down very hard.

It depends on how thick your paper is, but generally speaking, this trimmer cuts very smoothly with very little pressure. You can always run the cutter blade a second swipe just to be sure it cuts all the way through. I've had a lot of trimmers over the years and this is my all-time favorite.

Q: I love the idea of this...but am I seeing right, it only goes up to 5 inches, without extending the arm? If so, that's just not going to work for me.

To the very outside white edge, it is exactly 5 1/2 inches, then you need to extend the arm. I love this trimmer, and use it to cut chipboard for my mini-albums. It cuts so well, that I no longer use my Dahle 550 for chipboard.
