This astonishing scholarship, based on a laboriously created web site, is the tabula rosa of the Atlantic slave trade. Dedicated to Philip Curtin, who was the pioneer in collecting and assessing Atlantic trade data, David Eltis and David Richardson provide an atlas in which the full nature of this slave trade is easily accessible.Much of their data comes from the logs of tens of thousands of voyages. They also draw on documentation from the sending and receiving ports. Breaking down slave voyages in different periods, one can visually capture both the changes and the specific providers.The introduction by David Brion Davis, also a pioneer in this area, provides a cohesive overview to what follows. The brief summaries, as well as the illustrations, assist the reader in absorbing an overwhelming collection of data. A number of scholars--Hugh Thomas's massive THE SLAVE TRADE comes immediately to mind--have paved the way for what clearly is the definitive portrayal of the magnitude as well as the specifics of this Atlantic slave trade. For generalists the fact that only about 500,000 Africans were sent to North American territories (about 4% of the total Atlantic slave trade) might seem surprising. Also, those Africans in North America multiplied, while the millions of Africans sent to Caribbean sugar plantations seldom lasted seven years. The authors do not envisage any breakthrough scholarship on an earlier aspect of the African slave trade, which brought countless Africans into the slave markets of the Mediterranean.There apparently are no records remaining from slave traders who took their 'merchandise' across the Sahara. The Arab countries along the southern Mediterranean do not seem keen to encourage investigation of the magnitude of this slave trade, which may have included millions of souls. Ronald Segal's ISLAM'S BLACK SLAVES: THE OTHER BLACK DIASPORA provides an indication of a significant Saharan slave trade with precious few details as to whether 10 million or one million is a more accurate magnitude for this pre-Atlantic slave trade episode.

It gives good detail that backs up the Bible

If one really wants to know about the worldwide slave trade, this is a must book to have!It is a visual map of slave trade, which ought to be part of history courses!

I am sure this is a good book, but not for my interest. I was expecting an academic feature than this.

Out of all of the books I've purchased, this one is of the utmost importance.Taking the history out of it, translating it into what's really needed today is a necessary thing for us all.It's hard to digest, the scenery, the layout of how slavery was created, executed and still in action as the changes we see with this current president seems to be a way to take us backward instead of forward.This book should be a mandatory study in history. No need to term it critical race theory, it's history.

This book is fantastically detailed, I have just started to read & review it. So detailed in words, grafics & pictures of the horrific Transatlantic Slavery! It is the “companion” book to the “Slave Ships”, you need both to understand how greed and awerice ruled for over 400 years, and still does!

This is a very thorough and intresting book. The illustrations are also very beautiful and informative. I have not read all of it yet. I will add some more info later.

Excellent book, but it’s damaged. The edges are smashed up and their was tape on the edge of the front cover, which has left a very sticky residue which makes holding and reading the book unpleasant. If I had known the book was in this poor condition I wouldn’t have purchased it. Very disappointed in the condition, though the book itself is very well done
