Great Ligature. Good Sound.
I bought this for my 12 year old daughter who is a beginner. This was easy for her to put on and it made a HUGE difference in the quality of sound. Any parent who has to listen to beginner Sax players know what I mean. :) There were hardly any loud squeeks when she used this. It is so much better than the traditional cheap beginner metal ligature. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and this was a great choice for quality and affordability.

Comparing Rovner Classic Dark 1RL to MK III C1RL
COMPARING ROVNER CLASSIC DARK 1RL TO ROVNER MK III C1RL Previously, the Rovner Classic Dark 1RL was my favorite ligature. It gives the lower notes a deep, bass resonance, although it requires some practice to get nice sounding high notes. In its intended inverted position, it gives a warm, dark sound. Its rubber bands hold the reed firmly, over a wide area, damping unwanted overtones. Re-inverting it to “standard” lig position, gives it a brighter sound, but I personally prefer the darker sound. In this alternate (non-inverted) position, the end rods hold the reed by its edges, leaving the center free to vibrate more. BUT I IMMEDIATELY FELL IN LOVE with my new Rovner MK III C1RL ligature. It differs from its predecessor in a couple of ways. The inside of its rubber bands have more of a rough, gripping texture, and they continue all the way around, instead of its predecessor’s large, smooth area where it grips the reed. It has a split in the middle, allowing the two halves of the band to be independent of each other, with a narrow, open channel between them, which seem to let the reed vibrate more naturally. The result is more of an alto sax timbre, with uniform voicing across both the bass and treble notes. It plays effortlessly, without my needing to concentrate hard on getting a good tone from the higher notes. Playing is easier, sounds better, and I can effortlessly play vibratos on all notes. The higher notes are clean, and transitions across those notes cleaner. The MK III is not as dark as the Classic Dark, but the sound is fuller because of more overtones. MY SETUP. Your mileage may vary, because I am playing a mini-sax, which is more of a saxophlute than a horn. I did my comparison on a Key of G All Terrain Tenor Saxophone https://smile.amazon.com/All-Terrain-Tenor-Saxophone-Key-Professional/dp/B018N0YC7U/ My setup is a permanent Rico B5 alto mouthpiece, a Légère Studio Cut tenor 1.5 synthetic reed, and of course my new Rovner MK III ligature. The B5 is a narrow MP, so I have a couple of rubber bands around the Rovner MP cap in order to make it fit more snugly. I position the lig at the curve of the reed file, rather than at the ligature marking on the MP. Note that many musicians use a slightly longer than standard reed — a tenor instead of an alto reed, or a baritone rather than a tenor reed. This fills out the lower notes better, and adds flexibility to the reed. BREAK-IN PERIOD. This is an early review, because the Rovner 1RL and the Rovner C1RL ligatures each take a couple of weeks to stretch in and conform to the shape of the mouthpiece. However, I do not expect a significate change because I went through the same break-in period with my old Rovner 1RL. Just remember to tighten the screw before playing.

Greatly improves your sound quality!
Amazing! Never really thought much about ligatures in the past due to lack of knowledge (always used the metal cheapy ones that came with saxophone case) but this ligature blew me away. Had no idea just a small change could make a world of difference in the quality of the sound and tone of playing the sax. Literally like night and day! I would say that the stock metal ligatures that come with the student case would be compared to buying a pinto and purchasing the Rovner ligature is like buying a Ferrari. Great product!!

VERY pleased!
Not sure why this ligature got negative review!! What I realized was that maybe someone didn't read the instructions that advised "use cork grease to break in ligature". It fit like a glove von my Yamaha 4C mouthpiece and synthetic #2.5 reed. Sound was bold and I played 4 major cords flawlessly!!!

Slides around
Hard to tighten and get just right. Rides a bit high on the mouthpiece. Slides around too much. But, the quality of the make is excellent. Maybe I will get used to it. Takes longer than a standard ligature to attach to the mouthpiece.

This ligature is really good. I started to learn the saxophone in high school and have been playing for about 8 years now. But, in college, I took a 2 year break where I did not pick up my horn to focus on studies. After the 2 years, I decided to try to relearn the sax. Back in highschool, I was playing with a generic metal ligature and mouthpiece so I tried to upgrade. I bought a different $10 cheap, leather ligature off of Amazon and a Meyer sax mouthpiece. The mouthpiece was an improvement but I still had a lot of trouble playing the notes and getting a good sound. At the time, I thought it was because I had lost my playing abilities and blamed it entirely on myself. But, when the cheap ligature broke, I decided to buy a good one. I received this Rovner ligature a few days ago and I immediately noticed the change. Not only do I sound 10x better, but it is easier to get the notes out. I have always had problems with the lower register and I believe it was because of my low-quality mouthpiece and ligature. I realize now just how big of a difference it makes to have a good ligature to complement a good mouthpiece. Now, I just need to upgrade my cheap saxophone.

Dark(Paul Desmond
