More Inhumans than Black Panther, but always Kirby
It is more about the Inhumans than about the Black Panther, but this is the period when the Black Panther is first introduced along with his technologically utopian kingdom of Wakanda. It is Epic's habit of titling these collections based on a few issues, but there is nothing wrong with that. Epic's way of putting together every issue and in a larger volume of 400 pp or so continues to be a cool idea. Again, Kirby is in charge of this universe, introducing the Black Panther, developing the plot of the Inhumans, co-starring the Silver Surfer in some issues (and a solo adventure at the end of the volume), struggling against Dr. Doom and his recently acquired cosmic powers thru the surfboard of the SS, a battle against a Kree warrior, and the Richards are gonna have a baby (so they do have time for that! . It's beautiful to navigate through these stories and admire Kirby's artwork with all his techno-gadgets, which is quite consistent with other comics such as Thor and Captain America. Quite pleased!

Friends, Enemies and Lovers
This volume includes issues 52 through 67 and FF annuals 4 and 5. In the first comic, we are introduced to BLACK PANTHER, Prince of the Wakandas, a small, rural African nation with a secret. Although they live simply, they have very sophisticated technology. Johnny Storm, HUMAN TORCH, and his college roommate, Wyatt Wingfoot leave the team to search for Crystal of the INHUMANS. SILVER SURVER shows up and has super powers stolen by DOCTOR DOOM. Meanwhile, THING gets so jealous of Alicia Masters' friendship with SILVER SURFER that he breaks a date with her. She ends up getting kidnapped by a weird bunch of fringe scientists. Why is MR FANTASTIC insisting that one mission after another is too dangerous for the INVISIBLE GIRL? We don't find out the reason in this volume. This was the era of continued stories, so one issue blends into the next. Reading this book is like reading a novel.

A Cavalcade of Marvellous Arrivals
Coming right after the introduction of the Inhumans, the Silver Surfer and Galactus, you would be forgiven for assuming that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby might feel justified in resting on their laurels for a spell, but if anything, this volume (4, material from 1966-1967) shows that they were just getting started.Even by the standards of Silver Age Marvel, this volume is a bumper collection of first appearances - the Black Panther, Klaw, Blastarr, Ronan the Accuser, the Supreme Intelligence (and the Kree in general), Adam Warlock - to say nothing of the first appearance in the 'modern' age of the original Human Torch. It's amazing that there is space for anything but breathless introductions, but somehow the characters seem to have more space to develop and interact than ever before. Plenty of attention is paid to Johnny's quest to reunite with his Inhuman love Crystal (and his new friendship with Wyatt Wingfoot), some happy news for Reed and Susan, and the Thing's jealousy of the Surfer. The creative team seem to have an unending well of energy and imagination, and it all spills out on the page here, lovingly remastered and beautifully presented as we've come to expect from the Epic line.Extras include the original Kirby design for the Black Panther (or Coal Tiger as he was then), fourteen pages of original Kirby art, the cover to the seventh Masterwork volume, and a couple of Not Brand Echh stories. Silver Age comics didn't get much better than the stories contained here, and even now they have a power to them that reflects the beating heart of the still-growing Marvel universe. I couldn't recommend this book more!
