A more flexible alternative to U-Locks - at a cost
U Locks are the standard when it comes to serious bicycle security, and for good reason: the chunky rigid metal design is substantially more difficult to defeat than more flexible cables. The problem with U-Locks is twofold: one, they can be bulky and difficult to handle, and two, their rigidity can make them difficult or impossible to use when you have no bike rack around. When all you have is a lamp post, they're just no good. The Abus Bordo 6500 aka Granit X-Plus is a less common style lock, designed to be nearly as strong as U-Locks but without the limitations. Consisting of six metal bars linked together, these "link" style locks fold up into a smaller overall footprint and provide a great deal more flexibility in how they are applied. The 6500 is Abus's premiere model, and they have designated it with the rating of "Maximum Level 15." I purchased this when I got a new commuter bike, since I felt my old cable lock I had been using on my old beater would no longer be sufficient. Why did I choose this lock specifically? Well, here's the rundown:- The unit folds up to a quite compact size, much smaller than a U-lock or an equivalent chain lock.- The included case may be mounted directly to the frame in place of a water bottle cage, or for a less permanent installation you can place it inside the cage and use the velcro straps. I prefer this so I can use multiple bikes.- The link design allows you to use the lock with a variety of objects that would be impossible with a U-Lock.- In a pinch, you can even lock two bikes up with a single lock.In practice, it's proven to be quite easy to use. The links unfold easily and locking and unlocking works smoothly. You are provided two keys, so you can always have a spare. The lock is, however, very heavy; my scale reports 1582 grams, which is very close to the advertised 3.5 pounds. Weight is, of course, an inescapable reality of any lock that provides much security, and this isn't especially heavy for a good quality lock - my Kryptonite Evolution Mini-7 U-Lock with 4-Foot Flex Cable for example doesn't weigh much less (1297 grams) and that's not even a full size u-lock.Of course, there's the big question: how secure *is* this thing? I can tell you that my bike hasn't been stolen, but that's one data point and not very useful. According to tests which can be found on the Internet, though, this unit holds up quite well. Earlier and lower tier Abus link locks can be defeated with a sledge hammer against the link joints, but the 6500 appears to be more resilliant against such attacks. The most effective attack vector for this unit appears to be an angle grinder, against which it fares similarly to high end U-Locks. If a thief really wants your bike, this lock will not stop him, but he's going to need some solid equipment and more time to get through it.NB: I purchased this lock from the Amazon seller Xtreme Bike & Sport since they offered the best price at the time. Be aware that there are actually two versions of this lock, one which has a rubberized coating and one which does not - the one Xtreme Bike & Sport provided is the newer version which does have the coating.

VERY impressed with this lock.
This lock is a beast! Very heavy duty and easy to use. It "deploys" easily, so be careful when removing it from the holder or you may smack your bike accidently. The links are coated to protect finishes, but the weight might make a dent or send a cell phone flying, for example.I bought this for my new ebike because of the security rating. I don't plan on leaving my bike unattended, but sometimes nature calls, ya know. I'm having some challenges securing the lock holder to my bike. The housing for the battery is far too large in circumference to use the straps. The seat tube would work, except that would essentially take away half the step-through for my big feet. Sideways on that tube gets in the way of pedaling.Lo and behold, there are openings (backed by metal) that allow you to secure it to water bottle cage bolts. My bolts don't clear the ridges on the back of the holder, so I will need to get longer bolts from the hardware store. With my fat tire bike, the lock doesn't leave a lot of extra room to secure it to a sign post or bike rack. I'll probably use a cable to secure my front tire to the lock and go around a stationary object with the cable. All in all, I highly recommend this lock.

Excellent lock, here's my tips on usage
I've been using this lock in Brooklyn and NYC since the summer of 2015. It works great and looks good. I have it mounted directly on the bottle mounts on the seat tube, it makes for a very trim and compact look. It's true that the links start to get a little squeaky and not so fluid, but it's a very easy fix. I put some Pro Link Chain Lube on one side of the links, move them around a bit, then wipe up the excess. The lube goes through to the other side of the links. It's better than when it's new, and it preserves the links. The other tip I have is when you insert the open end back into the lock mechanism, don't fold up the links first. Let all the links arc around as you put the end in. If you fold it up first, it makes lining up the end with the lock barrel much harder. Once it's locked in, it easily folds up for putting into the holster. And just give it a little shake as you slide it into the holster, as it hangs up a little 3/4 of the way in.I don't leave my bike locked overnight on the street, that's tempting fate too much for my taste. If you're going to lock a bike up overnight regularly in a high theft area like NYC and Brooklyn, then go with the Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Transit FlexFrame Bracket (4-Inch x 8-Inch). And don't lock up a nice bike overnight. My other suggestion for making this lock even easier to use, is secure your front and rear wheels with Pit Lock axle locks. Then you don't have to worry about trying to get this lock to fit around a pole and the front wheel.

Heavy and Sturdy
A heavy lock but reasonable because of its security quality. The size does seem to offer more locking location flexibility than a u-lock. I was able to connect the carrying case to the bike frame with screws but I was only able to use one of the two velcro straps that came with the case. Either way, it stays on the bike well enough during travel. Would highly recommend.Edit: That was my original review. After using the lock for a month the folding lock appears to lack the ease of locking up a u-lock has. Yes the lock surrounds a larger area, but trying to angle the lock to lock both the frame and one of the tires is a pain. This is because the head of the lock is only capable of bending in one direction. Changed from 5 to 4 stars. Still a high quality lock but needs to be changed for future models

Amo mi candado
Súper útil, súper seguro. Es un poco grande y pesado pero garantiza una gran protección.

Love this Lock!
It is my primary lock for my e-bike. Simple to use, very secure and mounts right on the bike on the frame for easy storage. I often use this lock as a stand-alone for short stops or in conjunction with a cable or chain for longer stops if securing my bike in an isolated area.

Eben sehr Heavy Metal!Absolut empfehlenswert und jeden Euro wert. Man fühlt sich sicher und das zählt.

Excellent Balance of Security and Portability
I chose this lock after I returned the abus granit xplus 540 U lock as it was impractical to carry it around. A lock has to be practical and portable and this ones does an excellent job at that. Thanks to it’s shape, I am able to lock the frame and the front wheel. The case works well too, I must note that I mounted it using both the screws and the velcro straps for a very tight fit. The screws alone didn’t provide a good fit. But it’s super sturdy and doesn’t wobble at all. You can see how I wrapped the velcro straps ends and they don’t get in the way. It’s still a heavy lock ~1.8Kgs. But it sits low in the centre of the bike which makes it more manageable.
