Can I place the filter in the cabinet under the tank? Do I have to drill ant holes in the tank? Thanks.

Accepted Answer

Yes, as in my case too, you can place the filter under your tank within the cabinet.  There are no holes to drill, but you will have to make a couple of slots in your tank cover.  These are for the inlet and outlet tubes.  You probably already have one for your air tubing.  Most of these tank covers have a plastic strip across the rear, with one or two glass plates forming the front of the lid.  The back plastic strip usually cuts easily with scissors.  Be sure and check out some of the great youtube.com videos on setting up Eheim filters.  More good news - the filters are equipped with two inlet and two outlet valves with disconnects between each pair which greatly facilitate the removal and cleaning of the filter without the inadvertent release of water.  Again, check out the applicable youtube.com videos.  Also, since your filter canister will be within your cabinet, you might find it handy to install within your cabinet one of those inexpensive battery-powered adhesive-backed lights for when you need to access the canister or other stuff within the cabinet.

What types of filter media comes with this? Is it bioballs, ceramic rings, and sponges?

Comes with Eheim Substrat Pro large surface area biomedia and Eheim Mech and one sponge  a carbon filter floss and a polishing pad. Pretty much everything you mentioned. The bio media is small spheres with lots of surface are for beneficial bacteria. Any more questions feel free.

Question 3

Why does amazon say the 250 is for 66 gallons? the eheim website says that the 250 model is for 80liters (21gal) and the 350 is for 120l (31 gal).

I know this question is years old but people still read them - The box says "The tried and tested external canister filter for aquariums up to 250 litres" which is 66 gal but you have to pay attention to the words "up to" which means it can filter up to 66 gallons but chances are it will be much less., especially once the filter media starts to get clogged.  If you're worried about that, I'd recommend the 350 instead since it has a larger filtration capacity.

Question 4

Is this a complete kit with filter media, tubing, intake and return pipes?  I see that it comes with double isolating valves from other posts.

Yes, it comes with pretty much everything you need including the isolating valves, except you may want to get yourself a couple large medium bags to hold the filtration material and make it easier to remove from the filter at cleaning time. Hope that helps.
