Pocahontas: An American Princess (Penguin Young Readers, Level 4)

Slightly better than the movie?
So this was not great...it's a highly colonized viewpoint of the story. The icing on the cake is how it ends with "and now you know the true story of Pocahontas" 🤣...you can see in my pictures of snippits from the book that although they go in to detail about it Pocahontas and important events in her life, it seems as though they still took John Smith's own writings as factual evidence. You can decide for yourself but this is not the story I had hoped to tell my kids of Pocahontas.

Perfect gift for my young niece
Having learned that we are descendants of Pocahontas, my family are interested in learning more about her so this book was a perfect start for my young niece. I know she will treasure it and enjoy reading and re-reading it.

Bought for my daughter.

nice, but kinda subjective
We all liked the Sacajawea story better. This one comes with a lot of speculations about her emotions, and while they may be real feelings, I wanted a story that focused on her bravery instead.

The true story of Pocahontas
The story of am American princess and how she forged a peaceful path to be created between early English settlers and native American Indians. Has a sad ending, but appears to be historically accurate. I would say it would be a good read for kids aged 6-8.

Good for my intended use
Bought to use as a comparison to the Disney version and the Native American one. This does say at the end that it is the true version but while some details match the Native American one, some things are not quite the same. Gives reading level as fluent reader but print is still quite large.
