A Reading Rainbow find, my kids love this book.
My kids ask to read this really often. Great story, idea of something you could try to do yourselves (growing potatoes), and really unique art. Also a nice story featuring African American characters and a positive single parent relationship. It's a very positive book with a life skill (gardening, reusing/compost), the aspect of patience and waiting for something to grow, and the sharing of knowledge and making traditions (sharing a recipe). Would give as a gift and worth buying to read more than once. Includes a recipe :)

Really awesome abstract illustrations with a fun storyline.
My daughter originally saw this book via an old school reading rainbow episode on netflix. She has been talking about this book every day. Absolutely wonderful book with cool pictures & even has a recipe for mashed potatoes. I wish more books were illustrated like this, as most books made today have little imagination. The story line is somewhat predictable, but my daughter loves the story all the same & I guess that is what really matters!

Great on every level
4 1/2 year old was fascinated by the idea of growing food from old bits of food, the process of gardening. Interesting family presented: subtle yet kind reference to 'mom's house'. Also counting exercise once the potatoes are harvested, sliding in 'one potatoe, two potato' in a way that was relevent rather than a nonsense song. If I get a garden, I'll try it!

From the classroom into the garden
This book is a fun way to introduce children to gardening. The story describes how old potatoes that have started to sprout can be redeemed by cutting them into pieces and burying them in the soil. Step by step instructions in an entertaining family context. In our small group each child read a page aloud to all the others then we went outside and did the planting.
