The DODO Diet: Rapid Results, Permanent Fat Loss and Indulgent Days Off

Good plan but a little too strict for me
This book started me on my day on, day off dieting journey, but the restrictions the author puts on the meal before the fasting day stopped me following this particular version. My personal goal is for fat loss, but if I was able to follow such strict guidelines for my main meals six days a week, regular dieting would have worked just as well. I've found that using his plan for the fasting meal but relaxing a little on the alternate day allows me to lose weight while enjoying a more normal but mostly healthy lifestyle.I like his method for adapting the diet according to your individual needs, i.e. fat loss, health or for the athlete and I have found his suggestion for having a protein based home made meal ready to heat up for the meal that breaks my fast very helpful. It keeps me out of the kitchen on that day, and gives me a welcome break from cooking which is in itself a bonus.I may be losing weight a little slower than I could if I followed the Dodo plan as the author intended, but I've been trying to lose my excess weight for a long time and am so very weary of planning and calculating every meal. I want to lose the rest of my excess weight, but at the same time relearn how to eat the way that healthy people who are of normal weight do. I can manage the fasting day quite easily knowing that the next day I can enjoy a few healthy treats and even the very occasional unhealthy treat. Pigging out every second day definitely won't cut it.Everyone who wants to lose weight needs to try different diet suggestions and find out what works for their own bodies and life styles. I live alone so this on and off method works for me, but it would be difficult for someone who has to cook for others. I believe that if you strictly followed Dodo diet, it would work well, but it needs a little more self discipline that I can manage.

Fascinating, entertaining read. Wish more people knew how well it works
This book details intermittent fasting style diets that have a number of advantages over regular diets.I gave this book to a couple of friends and they both lost about a stone in one month and counting, and they're hooked. The great thing about this particular system is that they seem to have lost fat around their middle, but it hasn't left them looking drained or out of shape like regular diets seem to. It's also really easy to incorporate into your life in a way that most diets aren't and that's probably key.Personally, I wasn't really looking to reduce fat as I think I'm in good shape, but the book is actually pretty fascinating and a good entertaining read after the first chapter. What following the advice in the book did for me was to give me more energy in the gym, increase my muscle mass and as far as I can tell get a slightly more defined look.I've been going to the gym for over a decade and I have always made sure that I eat protein based meals regularly (6 small meals a day) That works fine but it's very hard to stick to. I was worried that following this kind of a diet would end up with me loosing muscle but the opposite happened actually. The main thing though is that it's so easy to follow compared to what I was doing before. It's the kind of thing that you can still do even when you're travelling, busy or on holiday, it's just easy and you'll notice a difference in how you feel within days.I really wish that everyone knew about these intermittent fasting types of diets, but they are quite new and to be honest they are so effective I think it's only a matter of time before people start to talk about them more.

A must read if you want to lose weight
Even if you decide that fasting is not for you, there is so much information about exercise, food, diet strategies, sleep and helpful tips to control stress, that it is worth the small price for this book. I learned a lot and can't wait to apply it for a healthy and slimmer life.

Not For the Unhealthy
I bought this book because I was looking for a healthy way to lose weight. This book is more about the history of the diet and the workings of the diet than it is recipes. After about 50 pages into the book, I found there are three reasons why this diet is not recommended for me. If you would rather read than be given a lot of recipes and meal planning ideas, this book is for you. So sorry I wasted my money.

Working for me!
This diet is working for me. I've lost a stone, plus 5 inches from my waist in just over a month - doing the 3 day fast option. He is very strict in what you can and can't have when you're fasting (for instance, no milk/cream in your coffee, it must be black, and no 'bulletproof' coffee - this part I've ignored as I can't drink it black and I've still lost weight, perhaps more slowly because of this, but the diet has to be workable for me. Technically, this is 'breaking fast' but after my 2 coffees I am extremely strict and just drink warm or sparkling water. The fasting has been a challenge at times for me, mainly on cold days when I crave warm stodge, but I'm enjoying the freedom of no meal preps during the day. I actually feel hungrier on non fast days now. I'm very grateful to Drew for writing such a clear and easy to read book, and fasting to this schedule means I can still look forward to a hot tasty meal in the evening.I feel absolutely no need to nibble around in the evening post-meal, which I used to and the weight loss has spurred me on. I do give myself a bit more freedom over the weekend, and allow myself a few more carbs, but keep it in check in just 1 or 2 meals. Again, the diet has to be do-able for me.Drew does mention that women can struggle more than men at times, and I've tended to break my fast early at around 5pm as I don't feel good going longer. His tip of preparing extra at dinner for lunch the next day has been great advice, albeit a bit boring to eat the same thing again. His recipes aren't all that great, but you can find lots of others which fit in with the plan online.I will just add, I've been coupling this with daily walks of around an hour, and Suzanne Bowen's fitness dvd's around 2/3 times a week which I love. I'm trying to work up to doing more of these but taking things slowly. Drew advises not to strenuously exercise on fast days, but to do something gentle like walking - which I've adhered to so far. However, other books on fasting I've read do recommend exercising while fasting for quicker results, so I may experiment around this sometime.

An excellent and thought provoking book
With the excess of Christmas requiring radical attention, this year I am going to adopt the Dodo philosophy. Having tried many diets in the past this one has certainly grabbed my attention. The authour approaches the ideas in the book with decent observations and scientific reasoning. So many books just state, "eat less pies and go running", this tells you why and guides you through it! The book is a decent size too, at 300+ pages it's a mine of information, techniques, recipes, and lifestyle advice, all at less than a tenner. Very impressed.

Worth reading if you are seriously considering a fasting diet.
Really great read. There is a good balance between the reasoning behind the diet, explanation of how it works and recipes.I particularly liked that it broke down the diet for different types of goals e.g. athletic person vs lose fat person vs maintain weight person.

Great solid easy to read book!
As a Personal Trainer I read a lot on I am always looking for practical examples of how I can use nutritional science to help all of my clients. Aside from a very easy reading style Drew has given countless easy to use tips on how to eat well and achieve great results whatever your goals are. For me by far the most useful part of the book as dedicated to adherence to eating well. In my experience its not the eating of good foods that is challenging, rather the maintenance. Drew has addressed this fully.
