Simple install, retracts, -- does the job of keeping the baby OFF the stairs.
We wanted a functional baby gate at the top of the main level stairs to keep a crawler/toddler safely at the TOP of the stairs. The $10 box store wooden fold-up type are functional and cheap, but after a while they become a hassle to "store" when you don't want the gate up (like evening/night/nap times). So we sought out a neat/tidy fixed installation solution - this fit the bill. Essentially no pinch points or hinges to be concerned about on this gate. It has a nice "latching"/lock feature on the gate reel/spindle that keeps it stiffer (it is a mesh gate after wall) after you latch it closed (or open I suppose if you don't want other kids messing with it while retracted?).It installs quick and simple enough... the included templates were accurate and useful. A caveat here: if you have a baseboard trim piece on the wall your installing onto make sure to consider removing/modifying the trim piece or at least placing as low and tight as possible to the floor/baseboard to minimize the distance from floor to the bottom of the mesh gate. The gate itself has some clearance (couple inches?) between bottom of the mounting brackets and the bottom of the mesh gate which if you install to much above the floor creates a gap that COULD allow a very inquisitive little one to squeeze under/through!Also, the retract/extend function is a bit clunky - but that I mean you cannot just whip it open to extend nor just pop it off the latch and let it freely reel itself back in... it will catch/bind/tangle. You have to pull carefully horizontal in/out to keep it reeling. Not really a problem for us, just know that is the case when you buy it.

It works, just barely.
Nice idea, but a bit fragile with mediocre implementation. It doesn't really work with pets unless the pets are very well behaved. It will easily break if challenged by dog 20 lb or larger. It's not hard to install there is a template showing mounting placement (before driving the screws drill pilot holes). It would best to not install on plaster board (sheet rock etc.) but If you do, you need to use appropriate anchors.Edit: I am using the gate, it works reasonably well but there is no doubt that my Danes would go though easily if they chose to. So I would use this only with very civil dogs (like Danes) that will respect the gate as indicating they are not to pass. On the other hand, if the dogs need to escape the area (like if a fire etc.) they can.To reiterate, when you install this, YOU MUST DRILL PILOT HOLES and preferably use an electric screwdriver with a tightness/torque control set to a lower setting. This way the screws will not break. It's not hard. One problem is the lock controlling the roll extension can jam easily. This is because the lock is internally a gear and thus will thus only a certain increments of extension. If it doesn't engage easily, adjust the roll in/out a bit. If it jams, the cap can be pulled out a bit. When the roll retraction inevitably decreases, it is possible to take the cap off the bottom cap (2 screws). The bottom roll bracket has 4 screws, remove these (being careful to the hold on to the bottom bracket otherwise it will rotate). It is then possible to tighten (or loosen) the spring by rotating the roll bracket in whole turns until the roll retraction is again adequate (not too tight). Next align the four holes, run the 4 screws back in to affix the bottom roll bracket and then reattach the bottom cap with the remaining two screws. The basic design is simple and not novel (it's essentially a window shade mounted horizontally). The application of the roll to be used as a door (rather than a shade) may be novel.

It does the job in a way
Me and this gate have a love hate relationship. I wanted a gate that didn’t have the step over bar like most metal gates. This was going to be on the top of the stairs and I could just see the bar being a trip hazard. This gate was perfect for my narrow stairway and hallway. I love how easy it is to open and close. The concept is kind of easy for the kids to learn to open. You push and twist the knob and on the other side the gate clips in. It can hold its weight. We have tested it. I like how the gate just rolls up and is contained. It is good quality as well. The downfall is because our baseboards are so high it left a gap so my daughter and dog have learned they can crawl under it. But that’s our housing issue. Not necessarily the gate. I kept it because for now it works. Main reason I wanted this gate was for in the middle of the night that with the kids being so sleepy I was afraid they would fall down the stairs. So for that purpose it works. But not total kid proof.

No bulky metal one to go through daily.. only use when needed.
I needed a baby gate from my home to my garage cause the little ones always try to follow us out the house and get into things or run around, we don’t have a screen door to prevent them and they climb over wooden baby gates so this was the best fit. I didn’t want a metal baby gate that would be in the way 24/7 so this retractable one was the better of all options!!Installation was not hard just had to line it up drill a few holes and done. It reacts easily and effortlessly without problems. We can open or close when needed. No metal gate to continuously open. The quality is a nice strong durable mesh screen that they cannot climb cause there is nothing to help them over, they also cannot go under it, the mesh is strong, even when they stand there and push on it, it won’t fall. The height is a good height it stops my 3 year old grandson down to the infants! This has been a safety thing we’ve needed for awhile and glad we made the choice to finally get it... no more escaping babies to chase or watch for when we are reversing cars!!This takes up little to no space at all when it’s retracted in or rolled up. We have it mounted on the outer side of the door frame and it’s very well in there. If you have little ones and don’t want a bulky metal gate or a cheap wooden one try this one, it’s been the better of baby gates I’ve owned.

Good for awhile but doesn’t last
This gate worked well for awhile but eventually the retraction of the gate quit. The middle just sags now and it won’t go back into the roll. We thought we fixed it once but it just keeps breaking again. Don’t expect it to hold up to toddler life or a rambunctious dog.
