Give it time to sink in
At first I thought I'd wasted my money (sorry, Mr. Smith!), so I put it aside for a bit. When I came back to it and actually started playing the exercises with the backing tracks, I finally understood what the author meant to teach, and it was great--it's a really different approach to theory that I've never encountered before. The usefulness of the tracks alone is worth price of the book. Consider that this book is meant to internalize the sound of music and how to combine scales to flow through chord changes seamlessly, so it's filled with scales and exercises that will only benefit you if you put in the time to listen carefully. I got it thinking it would talk more about soloing (my weak area), but it's all walking through chord changes. Of course it will still help me solo, but that's really dependent on how well I learn and put in the requisite effort.

great asset for jazz bassists
I studied with Putter over 25 years ago at the Musician's Institute. He was hands down the best bass instructor there on a variety of levels with his incredible knowledge of not only jazz standards, but composition, music theory and jazz bass technique. I was very excited to find his book; I am returning to playing and the need to refresh a lot of basics after pursuing a career as a luthier, and quite frankly, most bass books I perused do not even being to compare. This book provides a firm foundation, and it explains in clear ways how to proceed through Putter's studies...if you do the work, you will definitely improve. The CD also gives one a boost and helpful ear training to boot. Thank you, Putter, for laying all this out in such a user friendly format. Bravo!
