Great arrangements to solidify yourself as an intermediate player.
Not for beginners, but also advanced players would not find this challenging in the least. This book solidifies the skillset of an intermediate banjo player. These songs are meant to be played with fiddle accompianment and it says so near the beginning of the book. That being said, the arrangements can stand on their own, especially as background music (think at a campsite, bonfire, etc.). This book can be used to prepare the banjoist for developing melodic content down the road as it establishes a baseline familiarity with dozens of standard tunes.

Great book!
This is my second purchase of this fabulous book, to replace one I bought initially about 30 years ago, and absolutely wore out. One of the very best clawhammer tablature books ever published.

Wonderful resource
A lot of REALLY tasty versions of many "old standards", which bring them all alive anew. Not for beginners--most are challenging, some just a little, others more, and in different ways, but once you get them under control, a joy to play. I especially like Miles' versions of Soldier's Joy, Billy in the Low Ground (beautifully simple), Black-eyed Susie, Cluck Old Hen and Buffalo ("Roundtown") Gals. For all of these, these versions will serve as interesting variations on whatever other versions you may already play; together they give dancers and listeners a fuller experience of the tune. There's a member at the Banjo Hangout who has posted his own fine recordings of all or most of these--a nice reference.

Excellent clawhammer book for intermediate players
Excellent clawhammer book for intermediate players. Very beautifully arranged pieces. I justwish variations had been included. The instructions for how to clawhammer are not quiteadequate. I am a guitar picker and not used to the very different technique of clawhammering, which requires the thumb to catch and then pull off the fifth string, not just hit it like you wouldplaying guitar. Best to find someone who really knows how to learn from like I did.

Disappointed in the accompanying CD.
I'm very disappointed in the accompanying CD as it only had a few of the songs on it that are in the book. Most music bookstoday come with a complete list of the songs on the accompanying CD. I already had a very old version of this book and onlybought the second book to have the CD so that I could learn the songs by ear. Now I'm stuck with two books and a very incomplete(as far as I'm concerned) CD.

clawhammer banjo
The tablature is clearly laid out, easy to read. A minor criticism: the book is separated into sections by tuning but occassionally the tunes seem to be misplaced. I happen to have heard most of the tunes so perhaps I found the book more useful than some might.

this is my third copy i 've enjoyed it so much.
Most tunes are in in different tunings...so be prepared to re-tune. But it's a classic. This is my third copy.A CD that actually had the tunes in this book...would make it even better.

Sehr gut arrangiert, leider keine Spiralbindung

A good book but be careful to check what tuning is used on each tune
This is a good book for clawhammer banjo and contains much information chapter by chapter and a lot of the tunes are very playable. My only gripe is that the banjo TAB generally doesn't have the banjo tuning at the top. This would normally imply standard G tuning however if you read the introduction to each chapter it might say that the tunes in this chapter are in such and such tuning ie not standard tuning. I went through and wrote on each one what tuning it used however the last chapter contains a mixture and the correct tuning is not always obvious!Overall though I do like the book and have used it quite a lot.

Nice tunes lots of tab errors
Nice selection of clawhammer tunes. It does have a few pages on technique at the beginning but is more a tune book in my opinion. The reason for three stars is the amount of mistakes in the tablature is unreal considering how many reprints this book has had and the audio examples are just five tunes which is really disappointing. Some really nice tunes in it though

Very good book and filled with useful information
Very good book and filled with useful information. Lots of music to learn from easy to fairly difficult. Great information about different tunings.
