I get pine needles in my gutters and they clog the drain all the time. I cleaned the gutters and placed these guards in place. They hold the needles away from the actual downspout opening and water can flow under or through the gutter to get to the downspout and it will remain open for good drainage. They are not heavy duty so can be molded easily to fit the gutter opening. I have not had them long enough to see if they show any rust. Recommended.

Before you go up the ladder to install, I suggest the following. This will allow you to sit and perform some of the actions suggested at a table. Get a pair of medium duty gloves and a pair of metal cutting shears. Find a cylindrical item a bit smaller in diameter than drain pipes. It's really a treat if all the pipes are the same diameter. Wrap the screen base around the cylinder and make the overall shape similar to that of the product's picture. Unwrap screen, trim off most of the overlap and re-roll. The overlapped portions make the screen too fine, causing smaller particles to prematurely dam up the strainer. I bound the re-rolled screens as I re-rolled them and took them, bound, to the drain pipes. At the pipe, you can then, place the screen's bottom end into the pipe easily, provided you used a small enough cylinder. Unbind the screen and adjust, if necessary, to insure a tight fit. This saved me a lot of time on my roof. At 70, I don't like to use my extension ladder or work on the roof without a spotter. This saved me and the spotter a significant amount of time.

I don't have issues with leaves in my gutters, but I do have an issue with birds nesting in them, usually where they bend and they clog up with all the sticks and everything they've used for their nests. These are incredibly basic and easy to install - other than using a ladder of course. There is no way a bird is getter around them, and they so far after a year have stayed in place very well - they are cut on one side so you squeeze them and push them in to the top of the gutter - I left mine sticking up about level with the top of the gutter - and then they just expand and get a lot of friction, but no screws or anything its that easy just push them in and done. Certainly worked the best for me. I am sure they'd help with leaves as well, but the issue there would be that if you only have a small amount of leaves they'll just clog this up since they can't fit through, where they might otherwise just wash down the gutter. But still, absolutely the best fit for my scenario with those pesky birds.

This is kinda like a mini wire fence all rolled up into a cylinder. Hard to install as it hangs up on the sheet metal screws securing the downspout to the gutter. Then I realized I can unroll it slightly and cut some off until the fit is good. But this item will create a dam effect and block your downspouts. It does stop larger debris from getting into the downspout but can create a blockage in the gutter and your gutters may overflow without periodic cleaning. So now I have removed them and use gutter screens. I have a very large oak tree that is always dropping something in the gutters all year.

The Downspout cover is good quality, easy to install, and prevents downspout blockage.

They are well made and they can be compressed to fit oblong openings as in my case. The openings in my Downspouts are 2" Wide and 3" Long so I had to compress then prior to climbing my Ladder as I'm 82 tears young and chose not to try to make them fit once I was at the Top of my Extension Ladder. My Wife spotted for me, and didn't attempt to SHAKE THE LADDER! I MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT TODAY! I WOULD WELL IMAGINE THAT THEY WILL LAST FOR SOME YEARS TO COME!

I very rarely give any product 5 stars especially if I don't know how they will function long term. This product was shipped immediately and installation was easy. Some comments mentioned that they were difficult to install because the screws in the gutter that were fastening the downspout to the gutter were sticking out. All you have to do is roll the product up tighter before inserting and it will expand in place after you put it in. I am not looking at this product as never having to clean out my gutter again but if it will allow me to clean it out every year or every other year, that is still going to save me time and money. For less than $20, there really not much to lose.

Our downspouts are 3" x 2". I had to roll the product to condense it so slightly so it would fit. After a big rainstorm, I climbed up and took a look. The strainer caught pine needles, gravel from the shingles (after the needles), tree bark, and other debris. I was able to quickly clean the remainder and trust that the downspouts were spared of getting clogged. The upstream portion of the gutter was clean. Good purchase.
