A decent teaching text
An improvement on the last edition which had only 15 Tales. The supplementary texts are excellent (it includes The Tale of Florent by Gower for those interested in pursuing The Wife of Bath's Tale and the Loathly Lady, and it has included more articles by women). I do regret that it doesn't have a decent glossary. Like all marginally glossed texts, it expects students to recall the words it glossed on previous pages which requires flipping back and forth, as though we proceed through the text in order (which we don't). I had to photocopy a full glossary of Chaucer's words for my students. ALSO: there's no Physician's Tale. This is all important for talking about The Pardoner's Tale, which follows it in the fragment. And for talking about women.

Unreadable formatting on the kindle version
This is a review of the Kindle edition, not Geoffrey Chaucer's work. Unfortunately, I must express my dissatisfaction with the product.I am highly disappointed with Norton for the poor formatting in this edition. The spacing is horrible, and the notes are not near the text. This is the last Norton Critical Edition I will buy as I have had to return two kindle editions for poor formatting. At the high price tag, it should be better!

THE ACCOMPANYING ESSAYS DO NOT SERVE THE STUDENTS
The problem is with the accompanying essays, which are not written to entice or encourage the interest of literature students (undergrads). The second edition was much better in this respect.

A superb edition
Norton Critical Editions are always good and this is no exception. If you've read the Tales in Coghill's translation now is the time and this is the edition to get you into the original. Good text and helpful notes; and well-bound and produced. This is a permanent book.

Not in modern English
An unfair review because I thought I'd bought a modern translation, but it's in Middle English, which makes it difficult to follow.Doubtless an excellent academic book, but don't buy unless you're familiar with Middle English.
