It works!
It's a handheld can opener. This, on the surface, isn't a particularly big deal, but if you don't have a can opener? Well, that could be a problem. If you have a can opener that only kind of works? That's a problem too.And that's the world I'd been living in for years. We had a handheld can opener and it mostly worked. I'd have to struggle my way around the top of the can, always go back and re-turn around parts I'd already hit but didn't open all the way. It was annoying, but I didn't really feel like replacing it. It felt like, well, can openers are supposed to be a struggle. It wasn't a big deal. I've forever had to struggle with handheld can openers. That was life. For a few scattered shining moments over my life, I was lucky enough to use someone else's that actually worked and I thought, "wow, I should really replace ours." But it's a can opener, right? Something else more important would replace that thought, and I'd move on. Simply put, as awful as my old portable can opener was, I only really thought about it when I was using it.Fortunately, my wife saw me struggle once and, with a quick order on Amazon, bought this can opener to replace our old one. Life, or at least those few seconds a week in which I'm opening metal cans with a can opener, are much better now (and it's fewer seconds than it used to be).PROS It works. Like absolutely. I click the can opener into place. I turn the knob. In one revolution, the top comes up. The risk of me being cut by snags in the lid have diminished, the time opening cans has shortened, and my overall comfort level in the kitchen has improved. It's pretty reasonably priced. After we bought this and our quality of life improved as a result, we picked up another can opener at the dollar store, just to have in case anything happened to our new Swing-A-Way. I tried the dollar store unit and it was garbage. I'm not sure that could have opened a styrofoam cup. So, while this is more than a dollar, you get what you pay for, and the price point here is extremely reasonable. It's got a good weight and feel solid in my hand. It looks alright, too, though (of course) it looks like a can opener.CONS I was too stubborn to get it a few years ago. That's probably more my fault than the can opener's.Great purchase! I mean, it's a can opener, but I really like it.

A standard, quality unit. Decades old design
Mom had one since I was a boy 50+ years ago. It was still being used when she died.it’s now my sisters can opener. I think she has an electric can opener but uses the acoustic sometimes. They do an adequate job but get dirty/rusty if you don’t clean them well.Certainly worth the money. But beware, if you don’t plan on cleaning it well after each use, it’s gonna get groddy and rusted/corroded in the mechanisms.(I’m on my third one because I’m a slob, obviously)If it gets nasty, you can always buy another. I imagine thousands of these openers have already been packaged for sale, sitting in a warehouse in China. Then you can write a negative review on Amazon, about how a $10 can opener is a ripoff because you didn’t keep it clean.

Updated review; swing away vs oxo + answer to portable vs comfort grip
My Oxo Good Grips can opener failed after 6 years of use, when the plastic handle broke off. If you notice how small the little metal tab (atop the spring) is, it's no surprise that the plastic handle eventually broke off at this attachment point. That being said, it lasted 6 years & it's easier for a senior to turn the large, plastic, Oxo handle than the more narrow, metal handle on the Swing-A-Way (SAW).Unlike the cutting wheel on the Oxo, the SAW's is made of high carbon steel (not stainless), so it will rust, but that's why they say: hand wash & dry immediately. *If you disregard the directions & put it in the dishwasher anyway, you will greatly accelerate the rusting process (so laziness is not recommended). The SAW cutting wheel is sharper than the 1 on the Oxo->this is true w/ knives as well; if you want a really sharp edge, get high carbon steel.PS: I've received many questions about what's the difference between the Portable & Comfort Grip SAW models, so here's the data: The Portable is 7" long, while the the Comfort Grip is 8.5" long (gives you more leverage). Therefore, the Comfort Grip is best for folks who have less strength or arthritis in their hands. The Portable is 1.5" shorter, so it's easier to pack away when traveling & is easy to use for those w/ avg. hand strength & no arthritis.

Great can opener
I have had a swing away can opener for many years. It has outlasted 5-6 electric can openers and is still working great. I wanted another as backup because they are hard d to find where I live.
