do you have to charge it out of the box?

Yes, you can charge it and use it simultaneously. It charges quickly and holds a charge between uses. I set mine aside for three weeks and when I turned it on it was fully charged. This is the best new product I have seen in decades. I love that it operates without a cord. You can even charge your phone on the fan. Everything about this fan is great. It is so silent that I forget it is on. The design of the blades make it effective and super quiet. I have never seen a fan like this one. Great design and manufacture.

What size batteries does this require? This should be in the description!

Dear Customer, The battery is unremovable. We don't recommand you dissemble and replace the battery by yourselves. Can you charge the fan even if the battery still has some power left, any one know the correct way to charge the fan?;

Yes, you can charge fan with some battery power left. You can even plug in and use fan while charging.

Will I damage the battery if I use it plugged into the wall all the time? I only want to use the battery for power failures

I asked to manufacture and they said NO it would not hurt the fan. I leave mine plugged in all the time.
