Although long out- of-print, it remains one of the most extraordinarily inventive and beautifully told of all autobiographies. The text is accompanied by twenty plates which Chagall prepared especially to illustrate his life story. Together, the words and pictures paint an incomparable portrait of one of the greatest painters of this century, and of the now vanished milieu which inspired him. Read more See all Editorial Reviews

A Unique Memoir, with Unique Poetic Vision
Marvelous and unique book. It is, however, sometimes written upside down and therefore a little confusing, lol, but it is one of the books which I love the most, and I have read a few, though certainly far from all. A powerful, penetrating poetry, a vision of life and of others pregnant with beauty and truth

Evocative Word-Pictures
MY LIFE is unlike any other autobiography I've read. Who would have thought of Chagall as a poet? As a master of word pictures? There is not a dry, boring sentence in the entire book. Instead, Chagall paints verbal pictures of his youth, his family, his struggles to become an artist. It's must reading for anyone who aspires to remain an artist (painter, writer, dancer . . .). Although the book reads very, very quickly, the poignant feelings it evokes cannot end so quickly. I am haunted by Chagall's painful youth-the poverty, the discouragement he received from many quarters. And yet the autobiography is inspirational, because as a writer, I know that one cannot let go of an unshakable faith in one's calling.

Writes like he paints
It's a book of Marc Chagall's writing. He writes just like he paints, dreamy, surreal, metaphoric. Awesome read if you love Chagall's talent.

A treat to read
This autobiography gave me a real understanding of Marc Chagall's work....based on his life experiences. I have not been a big fan of his paintings but now I can enjoy them from understanding a bit about his life.

A beautiful companion to Chagall's artwork
i hesitated to buy this, but I am very glad I did. Chagall's writing is very much a literary version of his paintings, sculptures and windows. Poetic, expressive, slightly edgy, and providing lots of insight to the life of this extraordinary artist. Worth every penny.
