Now, two years after the events of Galaxy Express 999, Earth has become a battlefield, and Tetsuro is summoned to board the Three-Nine once more.

Adieu Galaxy Express 999
Adieu is the sequel to the 1979 classic animated film Galaxy Express 999. Adieu takes place three years after the destruction of planet Maetel. Tetsuro a fifteen year old freedom fighter boy fights for humans and all organic living beings against the Mechanized Empire that dominates the universe. He leaves Earth which is now a ravaged battlefield on board the 999 intergalactic space train. He meets various characters, friends, and foes along his journey, visits to several different planets, and encounters the mysterious Ghost Train. He eventually finds his friend Maetel and she joins him onboard the 999. They travel to the Andromeda galaxy where in the center lie the Mechanized Empire capital planet Great Andromeda. Maetel and Tetsuro travel to the center of the planet where Queen Prometheum, the supreme ruler of the Empire's consciousness still exists. Maetel is put in charge of the mechanized empire because she is the daughter of Prometheum. But she intends to put an end to it and attempts to shut Prometheum's machinery down. The truth is revealed to Tetsuro that the energy capsules that sustain machine people are actually drained life from humans transported there by the Ghost Train. Tetsuro is enraged when he finds his old humaniod alien friend Meowdar among the dead drained bodies. The mysterious machine man Faust is revealed to be Tetsuro's father. Tetsuro destroys the capsule production facilities and he and Maetel escape on the 999. While the 999 is being pursued by spacecraft and attack satellites Captain Harlock and Maetel's sister Emeraldas intervene with their warships to protect the 999 and work together to destroy Prometheum. There are some stunning and amazing space animations in this and the story is heartfelt. Watched digital streaming with Prime Video.

A film with some flaws, but still an entertaining movie for anime fans
Released a couple of years after the original Galaxy Express 999 movie, this sequel is an original story, not based on the original manga or television series (although there is one sequence heavily based on them). 3 years after the events of the first movie, Tetsuro is taking part in the resistance against the machine empire and once again boards the Galaxy Express, in search of Maetel. This movie is a bit darker than the original in both tone and story. Whereas the first movie had a lot of world building and exploration to it in addition to Tetsuro's main story of revenge, the plot is almost entirely dedicated to the human vs. machine conflict. Similar to the first movie, we have appearances from both Captain Harlock and Emeraldes, although they seem much more cameo in nature and less necessary than their appearances in the first movie. Maetel's role is also heavily toned down in comparison to the first movie, and she doesn't appear until more than 45 minutes have gone by. The movie contains a massive deus ex machina towards the end of the movie and rips off one of the most popular sci-fi movies of all time in a big way (a movie that had been released not too long before this movie's release).Where I think this movie really delivers though is the design and style. The animation is noticeably better than the first movie and I would argue its still very strong today, 35 years after its release. Matsumoto's design of the machine people and their world is amazing, one of my favorite from any anime or sci-fi movie. There's a beautiful dialogue-less 4 minute sequence just over half way through the movie as the Galaxy Express heads towards the planet Great Andromeda, a type of scene I think you just don't get anymore these days. The overall theme of limited human life versus eternal machine life is also one I really enjoyed (granted, a theme done better in the first movie). Is this movie absolutely necessary to see? No. The storyline was appropriately told in the first movie and a sequel wasn't really necessary. But I still find this a very enjoyable viewing experience despite its flaws.

the second movie
This is some time after the first movie Galaxy Express 999. Tetsuro Hoshino ison Earth trying to survive attacks by the Machine People when he receives amessage from Maetel. But there are secrets and mysteries behind their reunionwhen a man named Faust confronts Tetsuro! Also Captain Harlock and QueenEsmereldas joins the fight! This is the English Dub and some of the voice actorsreturn to do their characters. I would have liked more Captain Harlock thoughand some more to Faust's backstory. Good movie, but it is different from theGalaxy Express 999 t.v. series. Must watch!

Finally on DVD
Before this film came out in Japan (1981), Galaxy Express 999 had been a manga, TV series and feature-film. This film feels like more of a re-telling of the previous film than a sequel to it (boy gets on train... 2 1/2 hours pass... then a machine planet is destroyed). But the feel of this film is different. The film seems a bit more harsh and dark, even in the colors on the screen. The animation is a bit of a step up from Galaxy Express 999.With this DVD you get:* The film, uncut and restored. The colors are quite sharp.* The Viz dub from 1996 is used. Japanese audio and subtitles are also available.* A short image gallery* A trailer for Galaxy Express 999, the same one as on the Galaxy Express 999 disk.* A trailer for Adieu Galaxy Express 999, the same one as on the Galaxy Express 999 disk.* The "Sayonara - love light" song is used in the menus. It's been 15 years since this film was released on VHS by Viz. It's nice that a clean copy of this film finally made it to DVD.

Another Triumph.
I have already reviewed the first Galaxy Express so this will be a follow up to that review.Adieu is a second mastery of animation. A perfect follow up to the first film with all the same charm and appeal. I highly recommend owning both films. The story moves right along in this second film with the main characters from the first film and some new ones as well. Really both films should be seen back to back as they are very close to being one story line.As with the first dvd, this sequel is really high quality with excellent remastering, and dubbing.Every true anime collection should have Galaxy Express.
