The Broken Token Board Game Organizer - Dead of Winter Compatible Wood Storage Box with Multiple Trays and Dividers

The Broken Token is a small shop out of Escondido, California. They specialize in creating high-quality board game box inserts out of ¼” Baltic Birch wood. Oh my goodness – these things are like a gift from the heavens for us OCD table-top gamers! Not all inserts are equal though unfortunately. Some of their products seem to simply be better than others so I’ll be writing a review on each one individually that I’ve had the pleasure of assembling and using. This one is for Dead of Winter.The Dead of Winter insert is one of the most intuitive and useful of all the inserts I’ve used from the Broken Token. However, it also has some drawbacks that other didn’t.Like always with these, assembly was a breeze and was even enjoyable. However, I did realize quickly that some of the pieces were a little looser than I was used to with the Broken Token kits. This actually translated to some of the most used trays being really, really loose and requiring tape and super glue to hold them together. Certainly not ideal for a kit that costs nearly as much as the game itself.As for functionality though – this it is one of the best. I simply cannot imagine trying to play this game without this kit. Setup would be an absolute nightmare! This kit gives places to separate all the cards, all the figures, all the tokens, everything. It’s simply the best. I do wish, however, that there was a place for the location and player mats. Currently they just sit loosely on top of the board – which is functional, but not beautiful. :)So overall, this insert also is ranked pretty high up there. With the exception of the player/location mats not having a home and the pieces fitting together much looser than expected – this kit is perfect. Functionally this kit would get a 10/10 in my book – but quality is a 7/10. I’ll still recommend to all my friends though (most of whom think I’m crazy for spending as much on a box insert as the game itself).

Ok so you have Dead of winter or are thinking of buying your copy! Now you want to dive right into the came and you crack the lid on this puppy and you are face to face with several sheets of wound, barricade, food, starvation, zombie, and noise tokens. Not to mention the zombies and character standees which need to all be popped out along with the round and first player pieces! Then you have 6 location decks crossroad cards and then the starter item cards and then the main objective, character, exile, secret and betrayer secret objective cards. AndNow you are popping all the pieces out and are super excited, new game cannot wait to play. Then you look into the box and you think oh cool they provided baggies for everything. So now you either protect the cards and separate some but not all the cards and leave the pieces in one bag with standees every where or just separate the pieces. Now you are setting up the game and there are zombies every where tokens every where and cards everywhere. It is chaos and confusion. But the game is fun and a little slow. And maybe not so fun for your friends that are not super into table top games. And so maybe you play it not so often.That was my experience. This organizer was a godsend of the zombie apocalypse. You no longer have tokens sticking to someone's arm and falling to the nether realm of the floor. The sections for tokens and standees pull out and are accessible to you.all the cards fit nicely. And the organization of the box makes it so much easier. Clean up goes from minutes to lesser... amounts... of minutes. This is a must. It fits with no access room outside of the organizer, and does take a little bit of force to fit it into the box. Also with the layout of the organizer the hard playing board fits over the pieces and locks it into place.You can literally shake this upside down without the world ending. So you can store this sideways or even upside down.

Without this organizer I wouldn't find "Dead of Winter" near as enjoyable to play - there are just too many cards and pieces involved to have them laying loosely in a box. The Broken Token organizer makes setup and take-down a breeze - especially the cards; each card slot is labeled on the side so you know which cards go where without looking at them.The trays come out, too, which is a great touch; you can have the zombies/character tray sitting on the table for easy access or to pass around when players choose their characters. The dice tray and token tray also slide out so they can sit on the table for easy access as well.For the most part, everything stays where it belongs. If you don't transport your game or flip the box around much, everything should stay in its place. I was transporting mine in a backpack a lot and the tokens do get scrambled a *little* but under normal circumstances I think this wouldn't ordinarily be an issue and is of course still far preferable to the alternative of no insert.The included First Player marker is a fun bonus and I find it works better than the marker included in the game; because it stands up, we remember to pass it, and it stands out visually from everything.The organizer requires assembly and I like that sort of thing; I found the instructions to be straight forward and simple. The wood is more resilient than I thought; some pieces flex a bit when you try to snap them in place but I didn't break anything. I didn't glue anything together either, though one of the trays could use it on the side - the rest hold together fine on their own.Overall, Broken Token is AMAZING at designing inserts and I find this organizer to be a MUST for "Dead of Winter".

Loved playing this game, hated the set up and tear down time. So worth it to have all the tokens organized as well. Easy enough to put together but solid enough without glue.
