Kicks is an eclectic album of ten cover songs - from "Mack The Knife" written in 1928 for a German musical (known in the U.S. as The Threepenny Opera) that became a jazz standard, to "Bad Company" the eponymous theme song for the British rock band written in 1974. The arrangement and instrumentation, by producer Michael Napolitano (Ani DiFranco), provides a fresh and modern sonic infusion on every song. Rickie Lee Jones skyrocketed to fame in 1979 when as a barely known artist she appeared on Saturday Night Live. Performing her biggest hit Chuck E s In Love in her trademark red beret, Time Magazine instantly dubbed her the Duchess of Coolsville. Since then she has gone on to win two Grammy Awards, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone twice, and included in VH1 s 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll.

It’s Rickie Lee Jones...need I say more??
...but I will say more... I’ve always loved the beatnik poet known as Rickie Lee Jones... I’ve always thought the world would discover her like they discovered Joni...but not to be...but the trajectory of her musical impulses are the same..so, I’m glad that I can have her and she hasn’t faded away....a treasure to be sure....I got the album and the song “Bad Company” is worth the 20 bucks....brooding, slow and soaring at the end...Rickie is Bad Company all right.. the 2nd track is My Fathers Gun, an Elton John song, but it remind me of 70’s RLJ......the only song I didn’t like was Nagasaki...it didn’t seem to fit on this record...but I love the album as a whole...never disappoints me...I like growing old with her by my side.

She can do no wrong.
I am a huge fan of Rickie Lee Jones and have been since day one. She can do no wrong in my eyes.Is this her best CD ever? No, that will always be Pop Pop, in my opinion. If you are not a fan, buy that CD and you will be converted. Most of her CD's are excellent and this one fills the bill for me. Her interpretations of these songs are incredible. While many of the songs are unexpected for her, she does a great job with each and every one of them. She could sing the phone book and I would listen.

Where did my temperamental, lovelorn songstress go?
I was hoping for a second helping of her brilliant cover album "Pop Pop" but the studio mixing of"Kicks" got in the way. Her voice is recessed, the overall sound is dark and muddled. The song arrangements are uninspired. Ohh, I'm so disappointed! Where did my temperamental, lovelorn songstress go?

Rickie’s New One Is A Solid Laid Back Delight
I love this new cd. Her interpretations Bad Company and The End of the World are perfect. A laid back mellow album. Her best in years.

Rickie Lee Jones a True Recording Artist!
Rickie Lee Jones is unique, brilliant, and totally original. I love this C.D. I have been a fan since the beginning of her career.Unfortunately, she isn't as popular as she deserves to be, but what do most people know about real artists, and that she is!

Nothing Special
Unremarkable songs. Acceptable performance. Probably not worth buying unless you are a big fan.

Added to a fine collection but this whole album won’t see much play. A couple gems.
Just ok. I miss the quirky fun of the Chuck E.’s in Love days.

Only really let down by poor song selection.
I am a great fan of Rickie Lee and own all her albums. Her last "The Other Side of Desire" was spectacular featuring original compositions. An album of covers will always struggle to compete especially with some strange song selections. Mind you "Houston". "Cry" and "Nagasaki" work really well. The inclusion of the Elton John song "My G=Fathers Gun" loses it at least one star - what a waste of recording time!I loved "The Devil You Know" and "Pop Pop albums but thsi is only really let down by poor song selection.

Joyous and sublime
Rickie does a great job at reinterpreting this collection of songs by other writers/artists. Everyone will think of songs she might have chosen instead of these but in the end this is what she chose. It's a great album.
