Ten Tigers of Kwangtung

Rivalries between the 'Canton Tigers' and the Shaolin flesh-out this 1980 classic from writer/director Chang Cheh and the Shaw Brothers Studio. High quality martial arts as Hong Kong kungfu flicks go, and a good cast & storyline.

The movie was super entertaining

According to more than one website, an on-set injury that waylaid Alexander Fu Sheng for a long time pretty much halted work on "Ten Tigers". Subsequently, a framing plot device (with many new actors, naturally) was used to complete the film. That said, this is still very good, and let it be noted on the bonus Chang Cheh "Elegant Trails" documentary that Tokyo Shock's translation is the BEST version of all those that are currently out on DVD: even BLURBS from old Cheh film reviews are translated! No commentary track, but, still, another great TS DVD, for fans of Fu Sheng and the Venoms.

Fun but it can drag a bit in the middle. It's a revenge/slash revolution , basically every other Kung Fu flick. It starts with some local boys drunk at the gambling parlor rebel rousing when some suspicious characters come in, the guard puts them in s backroom to sleep it off. The guard is a friend who has history with revellers but now isolated the nefarious characters plot and kill the guard and leave a bloody message for the party boys. From here we go into flashbacks and learn that this is decades old vendetta.

Another SHAW BROTHERS classic really good movie definitely worth the money and time it's more of a revenge movie I won't go on and spoil it for you it does drag a little but the action gets you through it

10 tigers is an enjoyable film. If you're a Venom fan then you will be pleased to see the Poison Clan reunited in this movie. I thought the plot was good. An intricate tale of revenge and deception depicted through the use of many flashback sequences. Nevertheless, I thought the movie tended to drag a bit. While some of the fight scenes seemed like they were put in just to add needless action at certain points. However, the movie is still worth viewing. I would actually give the film 31/2 stars. With that said, I'm not upset that I purchased the movie because it does have some great fight sequences.

A younger man and an older official (his uncle) are hunting what seems to be a bunch of young men. They are ruthless in their approach to this task and intend to kill them one at a time.As the story unfolds in flashback we soon learn that this feud goes back a couple of decades to a time when an underground team of rebels known collectively as The Ten Tigers of Kwangtung were protecting an aged Chinese patriot and as a result they killed a Ching official..Years later and it's the Ten Tiger's sons that are being taken out...A historical revenge movie directed by Chang Cheh, starring loads of the key actors/martial artists from the Shaw stable at the time. The Venoms, Ti Lung, Alexander Fu Sheng, Johnny Wang Lung Wei etc all present.. and I have to say, overall I was very impressed.Admittedly the ending was rather weak and it never quite fulfilled it's potential but some of the fights coupled with the flip-side story (the baddies are the ones out for revenge for a change, hunting the sons of the men that killed their father!) were crackers.There are some really inventive fight sequences and a ton of strange weaponry used, including some really vicious concealed devices (belt sword, projectile chain darts etc), and the fight featuring an umbrella in the coffee shop was magic - one baddie, armed to the teeth with high-tech weapons goes for a dude who has to pick up anything that comes to hand in order to defend himself. Really breath taking and different.Because it's Chang Cheh at the helm, as you would imagine it's as tough as they come, with plenty of bloodshed and dying fly moments. Classic.Fans of the Hip Hop/Rap group The Wu Tang Clan will be interested to note that the sample of "I'll let you try my Wu Tang style, en garde" from off the track 'Bring Da Ruckus' is taken from this movie.The Tokyo Shock/Media Blasters release looks great in W/screen and with good sound. English subbed and dubbed. Special features highlight is a short documentary about legendary director Chang Cheh.4.25/5 and even then I maybe being a little harsh.

For all Shaw Brother movie fans or fans of kungfu classics, this film is a must have! Again it features all the cast from the classic 'Five Venoms' including action veterans Ti Lung and Wang Lung Wai. Action choreography is great and I was pleased to see that it featured some Shaolin Five Ancestors Sanchin kungfu apart from the usual Hung Kuen martial arts that Hung Fist master Lau Gar Liang loves to promote. This film features the famous 10 Tigers of Canton, 10 kungfu masters from Southern China that were known for their martial prowess. Interestingly the storyline has some semblance to Chris Nolan films in that you see the story of the 10 Tigers in a series of flashbacks, firstly from the recollection of their disciples and also from the recollection of their enemies who work for the hated Manchurian government. As usual it is a tale of how the 10 Tigers united against the hated authorities who were out to capture the leader of Taiwanese resistance fighters who were Ming Loyalists. The period featured a cold war rather than a hot one in that the Manchu government at this time was promoting unity and cooperation between the Manchurians and Han Chinese. As such, the authorities tried not to be too hard handed with the chinese but secretly continued their policy of eradicating all subversive opposition. Interesting feature and great Action!
