But, to his happy amazement, his novel, which was to become 'Look Homeward, Angel,' was accepted for publication. The only trouble was that it was overlong (by 300 pages) and had to be reduced. Although reluctant to see his poetic prose trimmed, Wolfe agreed and was helped by Perkins, who had become a true friend, with the result that it instantly became a favorite with the critics and a best seller. Success was even greater in 1935 when 'Of Time and the River' appeared, but the fight for reducing Wolfe's logorrheic written expression had been even harder, with the novel originally at 5,000 pages. Perkins managed to cut 90,000 words from the book, and with bitterness ultimately taking its toll, the relationships between the two men gradually deteriorated. Wolfe did not feel grateful to Perkins any longer but had started resenting him for owing his success to him. SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Berlin International Film Festival, Goya Awards, ...Genius (2016)

The intimacy of empathy
In the book of what we love and hate it is not wise to write what we can't erase, lest we marry a life that we can only justify by sacrificing a wiser version of our Self.Did you know that not so long ago intelligent thinkers were inspired to write intelligent books by an intelligent audience? So if I speak to you as if you are an intelligent human being with a conscientious attention-span will you be more receptive to me than you are to social conformity? Can YOU empathize with someone who tells the unadulterated Truth? Can you put your Self in the shoes of someone who is creatively compelled to share the Truth of their human experience in intimate detail?Do you have any concept of what it means to live in the image of a Creator?True Artists flirt with self-destruction CONSTANTLY, but only because of the disparity between Truth and so called “Reality”, and to light a lamp for the blind requires the conscious sacrifice of a social pariah. What role does the True Artist play in human society? He tests the integrity of your creativity and forces you to answer life’s underlying inquiry …do YOU need a martyr or a mystic?Shakespeare said, "The present eye praises that which is new though it be only gilded dust, rather than praising the ancient gold that is only dusty", and C.G. Jung said the same when he cogently stated, “To give birth to the ancient in a new time is Creation”Philosophy is the poetry of the mind's creative journey from knowledge to understanding, and Empathy is its beckoning editor. To adulterate is to render something cheaper quality ...in the book of what I love there is an ideal space for a Wife and Mother; the book of what I hate is a literal tome dedicated to adultery, which I call my journal of modern living. There is a child inside you, and a mother and Father; the name of your inner family is EMPATHY.Empathy is the outcome of natural maturity, but maturity isn't very trendy anymore. I'm not here to argue with your social conditioning but I can tell you with certainty that a humbled respect for masculinity is vital to the integrity of your empathy.True human intimacy is a natural expression of empathy; the antithesis of empathy is Vanity, known colloquially as narcissism. Vanity is glorified immaturity, and the natural purpose of immaturity is to undermine integrity.THE VAIN CAN ONLY EVER BE AS CREATIVE AS THEIR SOCIAL CONDITIONING!The natural progression of maturity grows from vanity to empathy, and if this feels like a verbal spanking please understand that thousands of years’ worth of human profundity has been attempting to inspire your potential by spanking you in exactly the same places.Your desiring mind has the attention-span of an overstimulated infant who never figured-out that the intuitions of a humbled heart naturally recognize the integrities of human history, and correspondingly that the wisdom of a matured mind is universal and eternal.Nature has the power to create and the power to consume, for She is life; only Integrity can stand the test of time, for He is the meaning of life.In the book of what you love, did you notice that it's now all but illegal to discriminate against Vanity? In the book of what you hate, did you notice that we devalue masculinity with complete social impunity? It is not wise to follow Life while She is consuming ...ironically, the natural purpose of integrity is to preserve sacred things and set the future free from the tyranny of human immaturity. To the man who is born to see the Truth, it is the veil of lies that is his greatest benefactress. The little gods have all lost the way because the True genius of a woman is her receptivity to nature, but modern human nature is anything but natural. We shame the Devil by naming our sins; each stone and leaf reveal ever more suble depths of meaning when upturned and collected, and the subtle path leads to a door with a mirror for a lock. When you make a friend of Irony you will see that all of Heaven and Nature by design have conspired to help you find the door.Be it prose or music notes or paint strokes, the integrity of our creativity depends entirely upon the purity of our receptivity, and we learn Chastity at home. Creative Genius is crucified simply by suckling the sour milk of a heartless attention-span, but don't take my word for it, ask the evidence of your eyes and the testimony of your heart and the untrendy spankings of your Integrity. The home with a heart is led by integrity, and Chastity is the sacred art of keeping sacred things from becoming public property. The home without a heart has no integrity and the child born of adultery is dependent upon society to do its thinking. There is a family inside of me; head heart and soul working in harmony. Peace-of-mind is the tapestry of my Country which is where I see the deeper Truth of things hidden beneath the surface of what they appear to be, and there I’ve made a trusted friend of Irony who gave me perfect proof that solitude is indeed the very seed of gratitude. There's a loving family inside me but it’s not ME that I hope you see in the intimate mirror of human empathy …don’t you recognize me?History is prophecy to a society trained to forget, so be cautious of what you pawn as "creativity", in fact, consuming every sacred thing and rendering them cheaper in quality is a fair definition of our modern ambitions, and yet, the opposite of consumption is Creation and the opposite of conformity is Creativity, and we each of us have a more or less latent Genius for creativity, so what does it mean to bring-out the best in everybody? The plural form of miasma is miasmas, and Irony is not the end but the friend of understanding. This movie has a surprise ending ...watch it again and see if you aren't guided toward your own best conclusion.

Great movie wonderful actors
You get to see the other side and the process of a book author, editor of the books, at least the way they use to do it way back. So interesting.

Stirring drama of one of the most genius authors of the last century
Bio of author Thomas Wolfe and his first publisher. I have read this author extensively and almost all of his writing is autobiographical so I feel that I know a little about him from his writing. I enjoyed the drama but do feel his childlike exuberance was a bit overplayed and his backwoods mannerisms overblown. They did not get the details of his death right. Maybe I'm taking it personally because I love this author's writing but the story of his life in going to college so young then on to Harvard speaks to his seriousness and need to achieve. Some parts of the movie make him seem childish and overbearing. The acting was good. The settings in 1920's-30's was authentic; costume , hair and makeup was appropriate.

Great work of art
You need a partner, a mentor, someone who truely understands your work. Geniosity is not everything to make you famous or I may say make you able to introduce you to the public enough to go on and continue your work of art.Thomas Wolfe ( Jude Law ) was a geninous writer back in 20s but he was not able to find a single editor to publish his novel back then. People thought that his work is useless, boring and mundane. He meets this another genious a bit older editor Maxwell Evarts Perkins ( Colin Firth ). He came to him and changed his world. He was Thomas' mentor, his father and his true friend. He stole Tomas from his wife Nicole Kidman took posses of him 24 hours a day, make him write genious books that he never wrote before, he coached him but never interrupted just a invisible touch of opinion but very precise and useful pinnacle that the writer Thmas can never do by himself that can change the whole book. They created the future, they created the book of legend together. They were practically lovers it's just that they didn't had sex.But slowly Thomas thought that it was him who is genious and he got a bit corrupted.Maxwell Evarts Perkins had to have a small moment of his own to make Thomas a lone time.Thomas realized that something is wrong too.Just like Boogie Nights by Paul Thomas Anderson they were about to re gathered, Thomas get sick and faded away in such a young age.We lost th atmost genious diamond writor of our life.Just like that.As we know bright burning candle burns as 4 time 10 times faster then normal lights. He was so fast burnt. But his last letter arrived late after his death that made his partner Maxwell Evarts Perkins so much cry at the end, make us cry so much at the end.It was about the confession that you were my everything, a love letter to him.I love this movie no matter what other people say.I had a great producer once.We made on feature together. We fought together at war. We made it.Then he was corrupted. We bought a house later and when I came back to my country, he borrow money by mortgaging the house without my permission and broke my heart. Now we are not talking anymore. But still I think about him all the time. He was like my brother still.Anyone needs a good partner. No one works alone.Because we are human.

Interesting
Colin Firth is great, Jude Law is quirky, Laura Linney is perfect, and Nicole Kidman… is Nicole Kidman. The story drags a bit and we never quite learn why Wolfe is special. Worth a watch; 3.5 stars.
