This film is extremely beautiful. The poverty in Africa is contrasted against the beautiful African people, the wonderful African children, and the stunning African landscape. The film is full of wonderful images of African cities and countryside.This film is extremely well directed. This is basically a murder mystery with an international scale. The pieces of the mystery are pulled together carefully and in an intelligent manner that keeps the viewer quessing while also keeping the viewer informed so that they do not lose track of the action. The cuts from interiors to exteriors, serenity to action, vista to close-up, are all masterfully done.The acting is superb, with Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes at their best. She plays the rich angry activist who over speaks and over commits. He is a more intellectual careful diplomat who is driven to bold brave action as he tries to discover who killed his wife and why.So if the photography, scenery, acting, and directing are all so excellent, why did I give it just 4 stars? I gave the film 4 stars primarily because of the shaky premise on which La Carre developed this plot. As we now know, TB is the major world killer of HIV infected persons. Medications to treat the treatment resistant strains of TB are crucial. In this film, a British pharmaceutical giant is testing a high powered TB medication on persons infected with HIV without consent and while some people are cured, many are dying from side effects of the powerful medication. This is so outlandish that it undermines the whole excellent film. Testing drugs without voluntary informed consent is no longer done and a pharmaceutical company that violated this rule would be in a heap of international trouble. The consequences of being caught are so great that no pharmaceutical company would ever do this. Secondly, in the film, those persons who are HIV positive and die of the side-effects of the drug are hidden in secret graves. Again, this is nonsense since licensure of medications requires extensive medical case records of those who did and did not receive the drugs. If those persons who died from side effects are deleted from the data-base, the medication may then be deemed efficacious when in fact it is not. However, once licensed, and side effects emerge, the lawsuits would destroy the pharmaceutical company. There is really no incentive to hide side effects, distort the data, and then face a industry destroying crisis when the true effects of the medication are later discovered.This is an enjoyable suspenceful mystery showing a man propelled into brave action due to the incredible grief he feels for the loss of his wife and his desire to try to discover why she was killed. I just wish the central premise conducted by the bad guys was more realistic.

Didn't watch but a portion of it but I get what the whole thing was about and I support that it exposes some of the exploitation that goes on by corporations and others, of Africans and their world countries around the globe. Drug companies, mining companies, etc have been using Africa as a test bed for decades and no one seems to care. Human trafficking has been going on there (an obvious matter of history) for thousands of years.I applaud the timely release of this movie onto Prime, whoever is responsible, for it helps expose what Big Pharma is really about in the name of "health" for all of us. What they learn in the third world they use on the first world.I can't really put my finger on why the movie just couldn't keep grasp of my attention, but it's ok anyway. I'll give it 4 stars for the message.

Watched this movie twice, and would even watch it a third time in spite of knowing the story and what will happen. Extremely engaging storyline albeit sad, and the acting of Rachel Weiss and Ralph Fiennes is mesmerizing.

This is my second look at this film, and after 13 years it seems more relevant than before. We start the film with the murder of Tessa, played by The film then proceeds back into her life, and how she met her husband Justin, played by Ralph Fiennes. This is the manner in which John Le caree, the best spy writer, usually marshall’s his books.We see how the problem Tessa discovered and what she reported and to who . Then in flashback we start to realize the mass of delusion and danger the people involved were. How did this occur, why did this occur is the path Justin takes to solve the murder of his wife. This is a wide sweeping look at the pharmaceutical wo4ld and how they play. No one is immune to danger, and , it is not until the final moments that we feel justice is being served, and on a bed of roses, at that.A first rate film, superbly acted, script well done and the storyline once difficult to believe is now seems almost commonplace.Recommended. prisrob 06-11-18

This is a beautifully done movie that focuses on issues of a couple, when the woman has strong commitments to nurture children in a world where distant drug companies are unscrupulous about consequences in their rush to get their drugs to market with inadequate testing. Because the testing is done far away in Africa, the negative consequences of unauthorized tests can be ignored. Seeing the destruction of this practice, and caring about the people, Tessa devotes her time to research and pursue the links in the chain that authorize the process - her commitment demands so much energy and time, and engagements with other researchers, that her husband finds himself asked to trust her - even when some clues suggest her infidelity. He is in great measure supportive of her work and she is strong in expecting his support - but unfortunately chooses to "protect" him, by not telling him the details. It takes her death and his investigation into it, for him to see that she was pursuing something others would kill her for. My one issue is that as usual, there is little depiction of self organizing systems that women use to get things done in Africa. So the white woman is the hero, along with her black medical colleague, but conditions otherwise look horrific and dirty with no collaboration among local people to clean public spaces.

If you are in this movie, yes you would be touched and feel sad. I am willing to help those people as much as I can. But today's world has changed, some people having been using this things to play political games.

Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), ein britischer Diplomat, der in Kenia stationiert ist, erfährt, dass seine Ehefrau Tessa (Rachel Weisz), eine Menschenrechtsaktivistin, ermordet worden ist.Als er seine Frau identifizieren muss, erinnert er sich daran, wie er sie in London kennen und lieben lernte, wie sie recht schnell heirateten, dann gemeinsam nach Kenia gingen und sich dann langsam einander entfremdeten.Trotzdem ist Justin entschlossen herauszufinden, wieso Tessa ermordet wurde und kommt dabei einer großen Firma auf die Spur, gegen die Tessa ermittelte…Ich war eigentlich der Meinung, dass ich ‚Der ewige Gärtner‘ irgendwann kurz nach Erscheinen auf DVD gesehen hatte. Wieso ich mich allerdings weder an die Handlung, noch an die vielen bekannten Gesichter erinnern konnte, ist mir ein Rätsel.Tja und wieso ich Ralph Fiennes als Justin Quayle vergessen habe, werde ich wohl nie ergründen….egal!Der Film, der auf einem Buch von John le Carré basiert, wird als Politikthriller beworben, was für mich als Label nur teilweise stimmig ist.Ich sehe den Film vor allem als Liebesgeschichte zwischen Tessa und Justin, die stürmisch beginnt und einen tragischen Verlauf nimmt.Das liegt zum einen sicher an der ruhigen Erzählweise, die ohne viel Action oder Effekthascherei auskommt.Man bekommt als Zuschauer eine Geschichte erzählt, die auf mehreren Ebenen zu berühren weiß und wird dabei nicht mit Verfolgungsjagden, Schießereien oder Gewalt bombadiert.Und das funktioniert, auch wenn ich in Zeiten von CGI und Kunstblutorgien fast vergessen hatte, dass das möglich ist.Und die Geschichte der vergessenen Menschen in Afrika ist einfach auch immer noch aktuell, während wir hier in Europa gerade scheinbar nichts wichtigeres zu tun haben, als darüber zu diskutieren, wie wir Menschen in Not am besten von uns fernhalten oder wieder loswerden.Zum anderen liegt das an den beiden wunderbaren Hauptdarstellern Rachel Weisz und Ralph Fiennes, die großartig ihre jeweilige Rolle spielen und die Liebe zwischen Tessa und Justin greifbar machen.Weisz ist die wütende Aktivistin, die unerschrocken und kompromisslos für andere Menschen einsteht, sich dabei mächtige Feinde macht und ein wenig die Verbindung zu ihrem Ehemann verliert.Fiennes ist der stille, nicht sonderlich erfolgreicher Diplomat, der von einer ungewöhnlichen Frau gefesselt wird, sich unsterblich verliebt und dann mit ihrem Verlust klarkommen muss.Die Verwandlung seiner Figur vom stoisch wirkenden Beamten, der sich mehr um seine Pflanzen als um seine afrikanischen Mitmenschen zu sorgen scheint, zum tatkräftigen Sucher der Warheit hat mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen.Justin wird nicht von heute auf morgen zum unverwundbaren Held, sondern geht unbeirrbar auf den Spuren seiner Frau seinen Weg, wohl wissend, wie gefährlich dieser ist;um kurz vor Schluss dann einen Satz seiner Frau zu widerholen, für den er, als sie ihn sagte, kein Verständnis hatte und den er nun nachvollziehen kann, um sich dann aber genau wie Tessa zuvor geschlagen zu geben und sich in das Unvermeidliche zu fügen.Gefehlt hat mir bei Justin höchstens das übermächtige Gärtnern, das durch den Titel angedeutet wird. Ja, er kümmert sich um seinen Garten und nutzt das Gärtnern als Ausgleich zum Alltag, aber als übertrieben kam das nicht wirklich bei mir an.Einen großen Gegenspieler, der plakativ als Bösewicht aufgebaut wird und an dem sich die Hauptfiguren reiben, gibt es hier übrigens nicht, auch wenn ein Boss der Firma (Gerard McSorley), gegen die Tessa ermittelt und ein hohes Tier aus dem Diplomatencorps (Bill Nighy) durchaus zum Feindbild taugen.Doch letztendlich hat fast jede Figur aus dem Westen irgendwie Schuld auf sich geladen, die eine mit mehr, die andere mit weniger guten Argumenten.In Nebenrollen findet man ebenfalls tolle Schauspieler wie Archie Panjabi, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard McCabe oder Donald Sumpter.Gefreut habe ich mich übrigens sehr über den filmischen Abstecher nach Berlin, wo Anneke Kim Sarnau mitwirken und Ralph Fiennes mehrere Sätze Deutsch sprechen darf, das unglaublich authentisch klang.Selbst das Hin- und Herspringen innerhalb der Handlung hat mir ausnahmsweise mal nichts ausgemacht, obwohl ich sonst eigentlich stringente Erzählungen lieber mag.Aber hier macht es einfach Sinn, wenn Justin sich zurückerinnert und man viele Eindrücke aus seiner Sicht erzählt bekommt.Für absolut gelungen halte ich auch Landschaftaufnahmen, Kameraführung und Hintergrundmusik und abgerundet wird das Ganze dann auch noch durch ein stimmiges Ende, das ich unglaublich passend fand, auch wenn es durchaus teilweise deprimierend ist.Insgesamt war das für mich auf mehreren Ebenen ein großartiges Erlebnis und ich glaube nicht, dass ich dieses Mal den Eindruck, den der Film bei mir hinterlassen hat, vergessen werde!

ハリウッドが｢商業的に合わない｣と敬遠したアフリカ題材の社会派作品で、ケニアを舞台に大手製薬企業と植民地宗主国の英国政府の結託によるアフリカでの新薬開発に関わる違法な臨床治験問題を扱った異色の問題作。ストーリーは1980年前後に原作者が実際に取材した内容を下敷きにしたフィクションだが、そう遠くない過去に類似例が有ったことを匂わせている。両国政府と製薬企業の利権の闇をサスペンスタッチで暴きながら、亡き妻との触れ合いを想い出しながら真実の愛と自己の責務に目覚めていく夫の旅路を静かに追った展開に心が動かされる。それ以上に眼を奪われるのは、たとえ内容はフィクションでも、カメラに写ったアフリカは現実だと言うこと。ケニアの首都ナイロビの70万人スラム街は、同じくリオのスラム街を｢シティ･オブ･ゴッド｣で撮った事で本作に起用されたブラジル人監督フェルナンド･メイレレス監督をして｢見たことない劣悪さ｣と言わしめた程。その場所での撮影交渉やエキストラ確保は至難だったらしいが、映画の主旨説明や街中に橋を建設する事で協力的に進んだ。この辺りはBlu-ray特典のメイキングに詳しくあるが、苦労の甲斐あって現代アフリカ貧民層の映像では恐らく映画史ナンバーワンだろう。貧困の中でも笑う子供達、逞しく生きる民族の息づかいが画面から聞こえ、手持ちカメラによる躍動的なカットが作品のドキュメント感を上手く高めている。配役では主人公の英外交官役へのレイフ･ファインズ起用は納得だ。映画原題の｢the Constant Gardener（誠実な庭師＝我関せず）｣が示す様に、ガーデニング愛好家の生真面目な高等弁務官が情熱的な恋人との出逢いから愛と正義に目覚めていく抑制された演技は本当に素晴らしい。また本作でアカデミー助演女優賞を獲ったレイチェル･ワイズは、夫への素直な愛に惹かれつつもジャーナリズムと平等主義に殉じる誇り高い女性を熱演していて、飾らない一つ一つの所作に惹き込まれる。この二人の愛情表現が何とも柔らかで慎ましく描かれている為、対する利権集団と二人に協力を求められながらも裏切る同僚達とのコントラストが際立って物悲しい。亡きテッサへの信愛と彼女から引き継いだ責務を為し遂げた夫のラストシーンには自然に心が震えてしまった。グローバル経済では世界各国の労働価格が重要な経営判断指標なのは当たり前だが、命や環境の価格に及ぶのは間違いだと確信させてくれる稀少な秀作。また、残虐なシーンは抑えてあるので是非女性にも観て頂きたい作品です。

I first watched The Constant Gardner not long after it came out. It was riveting. But one has to watch it a few times to really get the different layers to this film. Ralph Fiennes is as always just brilliant. He really shines in this film. It is one of my favourites. Actually in truth any film with Ralph Fiennes in it is always going to be superb!!!!The scenery used in this film is stunning. And the depth of poverty in the shanty towns is clear for all to see. This film is a message of how a multi national company can ruin so many lives and be responsible for so many deaths. A morality tale for our times. Superb acting and a thought provoking film.

Great film, thought provoking
