Patristic Texts at a Bargin Price
This book is a collection of homilies on the transfiguration. It is literally jammed packed with works from all sorts of authors from Origen (3rd Century) to Gregory Palamas (14 century). There are works by 20 authors. While this is an anthology the works included are complete texts. The average homily/sermon with an introduction takes up 10/20 pages. Some of the authors are well known while others are less well known or just down right obscure. It is, of course, natural, that Byzantine texts should be joined with 'Greek Patristic' texts. Orthodox do not acknowledge that the 'Patistic Age' ended in the 8th century so a work by Gregory Palamas, Theoleptos of Philadelphia or Neophytos the Recluse is just as much a Patristic work as John Chrysostom. The following authors are included:Origen of AlexandriaJohn ChrysostomProclus of ConstantinopleCyril of AlexandriaPantoleonLeontius, Presbyter of ConstantinoplePatriarch Anastasius of AntiochTimothy of AntiochAnonymous author of the 7 - 9th centuryAnastasius of SinaiAndrew of CreteJohn of DamascusEmperor Leo VI the Wise - 3 homiliesPhilagathos of CeramiNeophytos the RecluseTheoleptos of PhiladelphiaNikephoros ChoumnosPseudo- ChrysostomGregory the SinaiteGregory Palamas - 2 homiliesFew works of Anastasius of Sinai or Andrew of Crete have been translated into English so it was great to have these homilies. Emperor Leo and Nikephoros Choumnos were secular authors so it was interesting to read these religious works from them. Gregory the Sinaite contributed to the Philokalia and this homily is his only other surviving work. I have a soft spot for Neophytos the Recluse as I visited the monastery he founded in Cyprus so it was nice to see a short text from him.As always the books in the Popular Patristic Series are affordable. The level of scholarship is high as a result Daley aims for an educated reader and his notes reflect that. If you are a busy person then this is an easy book to read as each author is basically a self-contained text.

Terrific Collection!
Terrific collection of homilies on the Transfiguration by leading figures of early church through 1300. Great brief introduction to each writer. Sources otherwise totally inaccessible to lay readers.
