They don't spill their contents after you put them down!
Upon receipt of these S&P grinders my first impression was how big they really are. The glass base is slightly smaller than the diameter of a baseball. Their height makes slightly shorter than a can of soda pop (or beer). Their odd bulbous shape takes up more room in the cupboard than the two grinders they are replacing.Of course using these devices is not a one handed operation. You have to use both your hands. Before you do the lid needs to be removed and set aside, it pops off lifting it much like you would the lid of a plastic can of coffee. The lid fits across the top, the widest part, of the tapered metal top. You cannot simply pickup the grinder and grind, you must first remove the top (unless you store the grinder wihout the lid). So I guess you can say that it adds a step to grinding, something that may be noticed by those that already have owned or still own the typical grinder with the mechanism on the bottom - you know, the type of grinder that spills its contents anywhere you set them down. They sit upright as shown in the advertisement picture. If your look closely you will see that there are two slightly different textured metals that make up the tapered top. The ring closest to the glass base is what you turn to remove the grinder assembly to fill the container with salt, pepper corns, spice, etc. Turn the unit upside down and while holding this very same ring turn the upper tapered portion to grind the contents. I was very pleased with the quantity and consistency of the ground salt and pepper. With each turn you get a fair amount of nicely ground material. Best of all they don't spill their contents after you put them down like the typical grinder does!I give this set a 4 out of five stars simply because of the shape of the glass bases. Overall I am happy with the grinder set.

Overall quite pleased.
Bought these for my wife, who dos a lot in the kitchen, and had held off doing a review so she could really use them. Currently we are using rock sea-salt, and multi color pepper corns.PROS: Nice shape; feel good in the hand. Holds plenty of spice. Looks nice on the counter. Like that they can stand up with either end down. The lids are tight fitting and a nice plus, we have several other grinders that need to sit in a dish, as the grinder part needs to be down to stand.Grind wheel and grind selector both feel solid.CONS: The only real drawback we have had is when my wife uses the salt grinder over a cooking pot, moisture would make its way inside and condense. Her work-around (after letting the grinders air-out) is to grind a handful of salt into the lid first, then add that to the food, so the grinder is never directly over any steaming cook pot. I don't know if any other grinders would do that, but being clear glass yuu could see it right away. Also -while not a flaw- oddly enough, the salt crystals are clinging to the walls due to static.

Nice looking grinder, somewhat easy to fill, does not adjust easily, grinder broke when adjusting
I wanted a nice looking grinder that was easy to fill and use, and that I could adjust to get nice coarse pepper and salt.I do like the look, and they are easy to fill, except it is difficult to untwist the top without turning the grinder instead. I do like the lids that keep the salt and pepper dry. However, I could never adjust them to be coarse - both salt and pepper came out very fine and very small amounts at a time. After a year and a half of use, the adjuster knob on the salt grinder stuck. I tapped it against my hand to get all of the salt out of the mechanism, and tried again. The adjuster protrusions are very small, and hurt the fingers when you use them. I tried it with a towel, and again with a rubber jar opener between my fingers and the adjuster. No luck. I tried it very gently with a small wrench, not applying much pressure, and the the entire adjuster/grinder element broke off in my hand. This would be much more functional if the grinder motion, the adjuster motion, and the lid remover twist were three separate, but ergonomic areas. So, overall, not a functional grinder, despite the nice looks. Not really easy to open to refill since it is so easy to turn the grinder rather than the opener ring, although once open, it is a breeze to refill. My major complaints are that it is so difficult to adjust the coarseness and the adjuster is not ergonomic, and so you are stuck with deciding between not being able to adjust it vs risking breaking it. That and it only grinds small amounts at a time and way too fine even at the coarsest setting.
